Traditional cabinetry directly secures the cabinet doors to the frame,
which allows for easier installation. Framed cabinets often use partial inset
doors, where part of the door is inset into the opening and part overlays
the opening. Inset doors, where the door fits completely in the opening
and is flush with the cabinet surface, are also common.
Also known as full-access cabinetry, Euro-style cabinets differ the most
from traditional cabinetry because of their frameless make. Instead relying on thicker box construction for stability, the cabinets only use overlay
doors with the hinges directly attached to the sides of a cabinet box.
"European cabinetry is also installed differently - it's all on adjustable
legs and a hanging rail system," explained Amir Ilin, kitchen industry marketing, branding and sales expert at Pedini. "In American cabinetry, the
box is on the floor and shims are used to level it, and the cabinets basically
get screwed into the wall."
While framed cabinets often expose part of the hinge, frameless cabinets completely conceal the hinge with cup hinges. Since there is no
visible face frame when the doors are closed, the hinges allow the doors
to open without hitting adjacent doors and drawers.
"Frameless, European-style cabinets are made up of panels finished
on both sides and edged with a simple composit panel banding or narrow strip," said Sandro Marini, corporate communications manager and
art director of Arpa Industriale. "European hinges, cabinet joinery fittings,
drawer slides, shelf pins and other hardware fasten to the holes of this
strip, providing plenty of versatility and adaptability."
Euro hinges are known for their innovation, providing for situations
like glass doors with narrow frames, bi-fold doors and 45-degree corners.
Most Euro-style hinges are also adjustable.
"European cabinetry is also known for its innovation in engineering,"
said Hans Henkes, president and CEO of SieMatic Möbelwerke USA. "And
designed for endurance and longevity, it's typically easy to maintain and
clean - a must for today's fast-paced lifestyles."

The Big Difference
Without a frame, Euro-style cabinets allow for the fullest access to the
box and therefore the most storage - often increasing space by 10 to 30
percent compared to traditional cabinets.
"It's the most efficient use of space possible," said Michael Soltoff, CEO
of Eggersmann USA.
Within the extra space, storage solutions, lighting and mechanized
drawers customize the cabinetry. Finishes are often laser edged so the
colors stand the test of time while appearing seamless. Most European
companies embraced environmentally friendly policies early on, so Eurostyle cabinets use materials like UV lacquers, 100 percent natural ceramic, tempered glass and engineered wood.
"American cabinets are traditionally all wood," said Ilin. "It's beautiful,
but when you think about it, wood is not the best material for a kitchen
where you have changes in heat and humidity."
Storage also takes into account personal lifestyle. Customization, from
spice racks to magnetic accessories and cutlery dividers and waste systems, help clients better organize their kitchen spaces.
