5 W's: We Want
What We Want!
My boyfriend, Scott, and I are moving in together in a few months. He actually already lives
in the house, and I am going to join him. We
don't plan to stay there long - maybe a year -
before we buy a house together.
Scott has lived in his house for more than
10 years, and not only has he outgrown it, but
it doesn't match either of our needs in enough
ways. Because the plan is to sell it eventually, he
has put a lot of work into making it market friendly.
* The inside and out have been painted in popular neutrals.
* The cabinets have been painted with new hardware added.
* The newly sodded backyard now includes a fence.
* The grout has been polished in all of the bathrooms.
* Fluorescent fixtures were replaced by ambient cans.
* And last but not least, the carpeting will soon be replaced.
It definitely sounds good on paper, but it's still not enough. I know I
may sound spoiled, but it is what it is when it comes to being comfortable in my own home.
What is lacking is a master bath that beckons to me after a long
day. I want a shower with different showerhead and therapy options
- not one I can barely fit into because the builders needed to make
room for a gigantic tub no one ever uses. I want a vanity large enough
to fit all of my toiletries on top and all of our towels inside. I covet those
new drawer systems with a place for everything imaginable.
But what is most important to me - even more than the master bath
- is my dream kitchen. Now that I have seen what a kitchen can truly
be - through a plethora of different styles and floor plans created by
the wonderful designers available - I can't look back.
I want the open floor plan, the functional island, the professionalstyle appliances, the transitional cabinets with ALL of the bells and
whistles, the eye-catching backsplash, seating for guests to interact
with me while I cook - the list could really go on and on.
What we have now does not stack up - there's just not enough
room, so why spend the money on a space that can never be what we
want and need for our lifestyle? So we will bide our time and look for a
place that has at least some of these needs - then we can add as we
go when our money allows.
The theme of this issue is making a kitchen and bath work for your
client. Aesthetics are always important, but function, personalization
and convenience are right up there too. Today's homeowners - especially those who have already owned and are ready for their dream
home - want what they want and won't budge on certain things.
