How did you make the new space eco-friendly?

Designer creates eco-friendly
kitchen for her family

CIATE and owner of Sheryl Steinberg Interior Design,

says she has gained a deep appreciation for the unity of
our physical environment with our built environment.
As such,she decided to renovate her own original 1966
kitchen into an eco-friendly, modern space.
She opened up the kitchen into the dining area,
took out an old pantry room and pushed out the oven wall, added windows
for more natural light and used all eco-green materials and finishes.
"The kitchen is now completely usable and efficient for all of us," said
Steinberg. "It's the space we are in the most."
Besides being green, what were the other goals of the new design?

I wanted to take a dark, closed-off, outdated kitchen space and transform
it to a bright, modern, open, efficient space that is functional for our family's
everyday use. I also wanted to create workspace for food preparation and
cooking for multiple people at one time. I designed efficient and specific
storage solutions, including pullout drawers, drawer dividers, pullout pantry
and spice cabinets, flat pan storage, a pullout garbage and recycling cabinet
and lift-up cabinet storage.
We constantly use the backyard and patio year-round for sports, grilling
and gardening. Since the sliding door to that area used to be through the
dining room, we can now access it easily through the open space from the
kitchen without the wall dividing the two spaces.

Steinberg designed a layered
lighting system to include dimmable LEDs for general ambient lighting, LED undercabinet
task lighting and dimmable
pendants for decorative/task
lighting. LEDs use a fraction of
the energy of an incandescent
bulb, and dimming lights uses
even less energy.

- The cabinetry is made without VOCs, PVC
and formaldehyde.
- The Silestone quartz countertop is Greenguard
and USGBC certified.
- The EMIL Fashion Smart ceramic floor tile uses
up to 40 percent pre-consumer waste.
- The radiant floor heating efficiently heats one
room without having to increase heating to the
entire house.
- The Heath Ceramics Dimensional oval wall tiles
do not contain a lead glaze.
- All appliances are energy efficient.
- I eliminated the wall between the kitchen and
dining room and added two Pella Low-E double-pane windows on the east-facing wall for
increased daylighting and added views.
- The Benjamin Moore Natura paint contains
no VOCs.
What's your favorite part of the new kitchen?

It's new, fresh and modern but warm and inviting at the same time. The colors are soothing and
transform throughout the day and night with the
change in natural and artificial lighting.The mix of
wood/metal/stone/glass/ceramic creates a beautiful blend of materials.
What would you change if you could?

Honestly, not a thing. As a designer, it's important
to know how a client will use a space now, what
they want to change, why they want to change and
how they will grow with the space. And very importantly, know how to achieve a beautiful design
in the most efficient, practical and cost-effective
way.On this project,as both the client and designer,
I knew what I needed, what my family needed and
how we were going to use this space now and for
years to come while keeping a timeless design that
will not need to change.
