hardware chosen to match the appliances. Several appliances, like the refrigerator and warming
drawers, are integrated into the cabinetry for a
sleek look.
The middle cabinets between the oven set and
the refrigerator contrast these with a white finish
and no visible hardware. A linear white and gray
mosaic tile backsplash diverges from the otherwise
monotone palette, along with two frosted-glass
doors with LED lighting beneath the white cabinets.A tower of mixed frosted and open cabinetry at
the end of the peninsula also breaks up the solid gray.
By removing the walk-in pantry, more room
was given to the new floor plan, and in its place
more heavily organized cabinetry was brought
in. The backside of the peninsula also contains
additional storage.
SMOOTH OPERATIONS

"Everything in this kitchen is very sleek," said
Helms. "The countertops were cut to have a
flush overhang with the cabinet doors. Further,
the Miele cooktop is recessed into the countertops so that the edges of it are flush with
the surface."
This sleek look was further encouraged by the
client's request for no visible outlets. Those instead
ended up in atypical places,including drawers,cabinets, under the barstool overhang and in a toe kick.
Integrated LED lighting inside the cabinets also
created a seamless look.
Increased organizational tools eliminate the need
for countertop clutter. There are organizers under

the sink, in nearly every drawer and in a blind corner pullout. There is a spice
drawer, bucket pullouts and even a bread drawer.
TRADITIONAL TRANSITION

The final challenge was integrating some of the traditional details of the rest
of the home into the kitchen without doing a major renovation. Crown molding, baseboards and doorjambs were brought back into the kitchen from the
other rooms.The doorway in front of the new cooktop location was widened
for better visibility into the dining space, and neutral colors help transition
the rest of the home into the new kitchen.
"The transformation was significant,"said Helms."The new space provides
that clean and modern look our client wanted. After her first dinner party, she
commented that multiple visitors told her the same thing - the kitchen gave
them such a good feeling that they didn't want to leave."

