NKBA ANNOUNCES 2016 DESIGN AWARD WINNERS
The NKBA recently celebrated the winners of its 2016 Design Competition at an awards ceremony held during KBIS
at the Marquee Nightclub in Las Vegas. The event opened its doors to nearly 400 industry professionals, and more than
30 individuals earned top honors across six main kitchen and bath categories and eight specialty categories.

Tanya L. Woods, AKBD, of

XSTYLES in Bloomfield Hills,
Mich., won Best Bath for her
renovation of a dysfunctional
master bath with too many
separate, out-of-scale
elements. A standout is
the Amalfi tub set against a
backdrop of Modular Arts
Bloom Panels; another is the
curved shower wall with an
Oceanside Blu iridescent
glass mosaic; and another is
the double vanity with curved
sinks and double medicine

Best Kitchen went to
Lori Carroll of Lori Carroll
& Associates in Tucson,
Ariz., with Debra Gelety as
co-designer. This modified
open-plan layout was
designed with ample room
for food prep, cooking,
cleaning and storage. A
pass-through separates
the space from the dining
room without closing either
in. The designers chose
Afromasia wood for the
cabinets, which feature

Lean of William Standen
Co. in Sarnia, Ont., won
for Green Design with a
kitchen she created around
social responsibility, as
well as her clients' love of
nature. She focused on
improving air quality and
lowering toxic emissions,
and the project used an
active on-site recycling
program. Cabinet door
construction featured MDF,
a recycled wood product,
and the flooring is FSC- and
CARB-compliant engineered hardwood. Photo:

Sandra Gjesdahl of Bristol Design and Construction in Lynnwood, Wash.,
took home the Builder/Remodeler award by maximizing the views of this
kitchen with open-planned spaces and creating areas for extended family
to live and function well. She created multiple work zones, including the villa
pantry, which serves as a utilitarian space for storage and baking, and a dry bar

Budget-Friendly Kitchen
went to Cheryl Kees Clendenon of In Detail Interiors of
Pensacola, Fla. She designed
a galley-style kitchen with each
task dedicated to its own zone
to allow multiple cooks to use
the space. She planned for just
enough wall cabinets to house
glassware, stored the dishware
in drawers and included the
refrigeration at one end so as
not to interfere with cooking

 The Universal Design
award went to Bonnie J. Lewis
of 55+ TLC Interior Design in
Scottsdale, Ariz., for her accessible bathroom renovation. In
her ADA-compliant design, she
added a skylight and additional
light fixtures to improve visibility and prevent falls; used light,
bright and contrasting finishes
to aid with visual impairment;
chose non-glare, slip-resistant
porcelain flooring; and
included a curbless shower
with a 60-in. turning radius and
