"Scott had sketched a vision for the accessory dwelling," said Adam Wall,
Kronberg Wall principal, and the timing proved to be perfect. "Decatur was
updating its zoning to allow these types of structures, so we were excited that
his family and his father could have the opportunity to live so close.They still
have clearly defined private spaces but are connected by shared space in the
outdoor patio and porches."
A Strategic Plan
IN ADDITION TO CONSTRUCTING a

new building in the spacious backyard, the
main house would receive a kitchen renovation with an open concept that
would allow for family time and entertaining. Zoning for the accessory
dwelling necessitated size limitations, so the goal was to create a kitchen that
would be as large and open as possible while still defined as its own space.The
resulting home has one large living area as well as a bedroom and bathroom.
Double doors on three sides make it feel larger than its 800 square feet. A
three-side wrap porch leads to the shared outdoor patio and grill area, and the
dwelling also has a private porch. Thinking of the future, Wall designed the
accessory dwelling with a variety of adaptable features to create a framework
for accommodations and ADA compliance.
The team chose to complete the accessory dwelling before tackling the
main house kitchen renovation. This permitted Walt to move into his new
space before the second kitchen got its update. Instead of presenting a challenge, working on two projects back-to-back proved to be a benefit.
"We were able to begin a dialogue when working on the accessory dwelling, which made communication with the clients clear as we moved into the
main house," explained Wall.
By the second project, rapport and the decision-making process simplified,
and as the design took shape, the homeowners' tastes were reflected in both
kitchens. While not identical, there is a lot of crossover between them, and
they reflect a sophisticated mix between traditional and contemporary style.
The kitchens and the accessory dwelling bathroom feature custom cabinets
by Jackson Cabinets.
The two spaces also have complementary hues. In the main house, walls
were painted Sherwin Williams' Repose Gray, and the cabinets are Dovetail.
In the accessory dwelling, the walls are Benjamin Moore's China White,
and cabinetry features Sherwin Williams' Dorian Gray. White quartzite
countertops and white subway tiles provide further continuity.
"Lindsey had a clear vision for the project, and the interiors naturally began
to complement each other [because of ] her tastes and vision," said Wall,
who noted that she is an interior designer with Kings Home Furnishings in
Atlanta. "Using a complementary palette created a cohesive look."
Size and Structural Challenges

CHALLENGES AROSE concerning the accessory dwelling's size constraints and

the fact that some of Walt's appliances were moved from the main house and
reused in his new kitchen, so those sizes had to be worked into the design.
"There was a fair amount of fine tuning the drawings because it was a small
area, and we needed to make all of the existing appliances fit," said Wall.
Although the main house kitchen boasted a big space to work with, the
architects had to maneuver around existing window openings, which they
preferred not to change because of the home's brick structure.
The kitchen renovation resulted in the ample space Scott and Lindsey
desired.The same concept translated well into the accessory dwelling kitchen,
which overlooks the living room area and is flanked by Walt's library, a cozy
space featuring ceiling-height bookshelves and cabinets that coordinate with
those in the kitchen.
