UMPING ON BOARD A PROJECT when it is already un-

derway is like walking into the middle of someone
else's conversation - not only is it awkward, but you
will also have to catch up on what you've already
missed. That is the design equivalent of the challenge
that Michael Winn faced when he was brought in
to a renovation in Arlington, Va., that had already
commenced. Or, as he put it, "It was like designing
the car while you're driving down the road."
The homeowner had worked with an architect to
create a very minimal schematic design for a floor
plan, but no other decisions had been made. Plus,
the homeowner had done a significant amount
of demolition on his own, including taking out a
number of walls, one of which was loadbearing. It
was soon obvious that they were in over their heads.
Winn, owner of Winn Design + Build in Falls
Church, Va., was requested by the interior designer,
and his task was to rectify some of the mistakes made
and work with the client to finalize the project. When
he stepped in, the first floor of the house had been
gutted, with the house taken down to the framing.
The homeowner's main goals were to enlarge
the kitchen and main bathroom. To accomplish
that, Winn and his team had to reconfigure the
space by making some significant structural
changes to the 1940s colonial-style home, which
had been purchased the year earlier.

Kent single vanity from Restoration Hardware features an Italian
Carrara marble sink top.

"Two of the walls surrounding the previous kitchen were completely removed as was another wall separating what is now the dining room from the
family room, and that was a masonry wall,"explained Winn.
That was the wall the homeowner had opened, which caused some issues
with the plumbing in the upstairs bathroom. The builders then extended the
kitchen into the adjoining former dining room and the foyer entry.
Consistent with homes from that era, some of the walls weren't square,
so they had to make adjustments to get everything to line up evenly. The
masonry wall was crumbling and cracking in some locations, but eventually they were able to salvage it.
"The floors from one room to the next were at different levels,so we had to
take all flooring out on the first floor and build it back up again and re-level
the floor,"said Winn."That was pretty significant."
In addition, they had to rework the existing mechanical system, which was
not laid out very well to begin with and had to complete a decent amount
of insulation work. Once Winn and his team completed the demolition,
framing and rough-ins, the project went smoothly.

THE ORIGINAL KITCHEN WAS TIGHTLY TUCKED AWAY

into a back corner and was only about 12 by 14
feet. Not only was it too small for the family's
needs, it was an obstacle to achieving an openfloor concept. They also wanted a transitional style
with cleaner lines rather than the elaborate moldings and millwork already in place.
According to Winn, they wanted to get rid of a
lot of what they considered to be fussiness, and they
ended up with a clean, open design. Like a game of
Tetris,he was faced with the challenge of knocking out
walls and relocating rooms to create a new footprint.

TRUE TO WHAT THE HOMEOWNERS DESIRED, the new kitchen is modern and
sleek, with white Shaker cabinets, a large hutch and a farmer's sink. The
contrast between the white cabinetry and dark white oak flooring also adds
a little zing to the space. Other refreshing features include a wine fridge
and globe-shaped pendant lighting over the island. A solid knee wall
hides the basement stairs without sacrificing the openness of the room.
"We also did a leathered granite countertop in black that turned out
really, really well," said Winn. "It has been very popular; we get a lot of
requests for that now."
The kitchen, which is now doubled in size, is an inviting gathering
space with plenty of room for more than one cook and multiple guests.
