As the emphasis in interior design turns more toward
considering the health and wellbeing of persons in
the built environment, those in the kitchen and bath
industry need to be aware of which issues must be addressed. Aesthetics and function of a space have always
held a significant weight, but the human needs of the
occupants are of equal import. Substantive factors, such
as indoor air quality, biophilic design, universal design,
color psychology and the effects of lighting all influence
how humans use, enjoy and flourish in an environment.
These human needs will be explored in the context of
the design of kitchen and bath spaces. (See pages 68&70
for more on this topic.)
How many designers are aware of the toxic effects
of carbon monoxide from gas cooktops? Of the consequences of unvented bathrooms? Of excluding nature
and natural materials? What paint colors shouldn't be
used in kitchens? It is imperative that designers delve
deeper into these aspects and focus on the benefits of
keeping these needs in the forefront of their design.

Even the most successful business owners often wonder
"am I doing it right?" For kitchen and bath experts
curious to know what other designers do to stay on top
of their game, this session is a unique opportunity to
hear first-hand and share ideas from other successful
design professionals. Beverly Hills-based Christopher
Grubb will share a casual yet intimate discussion on the
practices he has relied on for success. He'll share his
methods for obtaining new business (procuring); organizing his design team, selecting projects for "luxury"
and setting fees (planning); building relationships with
contractors to boost business and increase profits for
both (partnership); helping couples negotiate a project
for two (psychology); and finally getting visibility on
a variety of media platforms (publicity). Grubb will
share his own award-winning projects as examples,
providing tips to those designers looking to polish their
business practices.

SMALL BUSINESSES

In today's regulatory and business environment, it is critically important that you be aware of the ever-changing
legal landscape. Ed Nagorsky has represented the small
business community for more than 30 years and advises
the association and its members on various legal topics
of concern.
Th is year's KBIS legal program will focus on the
top issues facing small businesses in 2017 and how you
can navigate these traps in your day-to-day business.
Advice will be on the hottest topics facing the industry
and may include important principals of contract law
every business needs to know: contract liability issues;
new regulations concerning mis-classification of independent contractors and how to avoid problems; new
efforts to extend joint employer liability with advice
on how to minimize the risk; and the Department of
Labor's new changes to the rules regarding overtime
pay, which will govern (and increase) your payment of
overtime to employees.
