Along with having as much customization outside
as inside, homeowners are looking to their outdoor
kitchens as an opportunity to explore their wilder
cooking side.
"More consumers are looking for authenticity
with their outdoor kitchen products," said Russ
Faulk, chief designer and head of product for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet."They want tools and
appliances to reflect their growing interest in more
adventuresome cooking."
Outdoor kitchens open the way to cooking
methods that would be hazardous inside. Since
there are often no roof restrictions, cooking appliances with open flames or smokers and fryers
are viable options. A designer working with an
unsure client can find out what might work for
them by learning about what they eat; a barbecue enthusiast or a deep-fried chicken lover
can finally make their favorites at home with an
outdoor kitchen.
"We're also seeing trends that explore outdoor
features beyond the grill - like outdoor fireplaces
and fire bowls," said Nadolski. "They also range
from the addition of butler's pantries to multiple
entertaining zones complete with multifunctional
furniture, gaming areas and restrooms."

having his or her back turned to the guests," added Faulk.

While fun features like pizza ovens or outdoor televisions are distinguishing factors in today's outdoor kitchens, helping the outdoor kitchen endure
the elements is the biggest design challenge.
"The furniture industry is keeping pace with the trends in outdoor living
with the advances made in finishes and materials that work long term in both
indoor and outdoor settings,"said Nadolski."Appliance makers are also doing
a great job of creating products for use outdoors."
