RECONFIGURING SPACE
The overall project, which took about five months,
included adding a partial second story to the home
and extensive façade work. Inside, the main goal
was to open up the first floor of the home so the
kitchen could become a central hub. While an
open concept is not a brand new one, it remains
popular - particularly as many homeowners seek
to establish a link between the kitchen and the
family living space.
Already in place was a substantial load-bearing
wall that divided the kitchen from the living room
space. A considerable challenge was to implement
a substantial steel beam to transfer the weight of
the second floor.
"Given the length of the beam, the fact that it
was required to be steel to support the weight of
the second floor and that this was being installed
in existing construction - it was not an easy task,"
explained Pavelka, adding that the work paid off,
as the layout was a very important element in
creating the flow between the spaces. "With the
removal of that wall, it really provided us with the
opportunity to connect those spaces."
Once the structural component of the project was
completed,it was smooth sailing. No major budgetary or any other unexpected issues cropped up.
"We did an extensive set of blueprints on the
front end to mitigate that; there were very few
changes midstream," added Pavelka.
AN UNDERSTATED STATEMENT
After builders successfully implemented the layout
reconfiguration, the focus shifted to how to achieve
a mid-century modern look. One hallmark of this
design is neutrals paired with woods, which is thoroughly exemplified in this kitchen.
"The richness of the woods was the starting point and the foundation for
where the design led," said Pavelka, adding that walnut was the deliberate
cabinetry choice. "Walnut is a material that is pretty readily used because of
the beauty and warmth of the wood. All of the grain patterns you see in wood
are pronounced, and that is typical in a mid-century aesthetic."
Not only is natural wood a common feature in this design aesthetic, so are
the flat-paneled cabinets. Despite the simplicity of the cabinets, they are not
wholly undecorated.
"The base cabinets have elongated handles to reinforce the lines of the
cabinet," added Pavelka.
The designers installed new flooring in the kitchen to complement the hardwood floors already present in other areas of the home to help tie things together.
