"On the coasts and in particular urban areas
where space is at a premium, we have definitely
seen increased interest in these types of products,"
said Noah Taft, senior vice president of marketing
and sales for California Faucets.
STORAGE ON A BUDGET

Often the main purpose of a small room redesign
or addition is to provide more storage. Being
able to customize cabinetry is the best solution,
but the high price tag might be a hard sell with
some clients.
"For these spaces, we aren't shy to get lowerbudget cabinetry designs," said designer Ronald
Alvarez of Miami-based Moniomi Interior Design. "We just like to be sure to pair them with a
nicer selection of handles or a higher-end lighting
fixture to give the space a luxe look."
Taking cabinets as high as they will go can
optimize storage, especially for seldom-used
items, and hinging cabinet doors vertically keeps
them out of the way and uses less square footage. Cubbies with drawers are also viable options
for storage that stays under budget. Wall niches,
particularly those lined with storage containers,
offer practical storage alternatives while adding
visual interest.
"Another solution is to hang several small tins
in exciting colors, where lost-and-found items can
be placed, such as buttons, change and pens," said
designer Jane Cunningham of Las Vegas-based
Room Resolutions. "It's a great way to sort all of
your miscellaneous items."

CREATING MORE SPACE

When there is not a lot of room available, it is important that all of the components in the room are
situated for easy function and flow. If the budget
allows for it, custom furniture and smaller appliances and fixtures might work best.
In a bathroom where a standard vanity is 24
inches, finding or designing a piece that only protrudes 20 inches into the space can make a difference.That sink might also work best at a far end of
the counter - instead of the center - to maximize
the countertop. A counter-depth fridge instead
of a full-height model keeps the cabinetry line
clean and makes room for more storage, not only
in kitchens but also in mudrooms.
"We've also seen more instances of customers preferring to have a smaller refrigeration unit
in the mudroom - just for the kids - when they
come home from school," said Josef Steigmiller,
divisional director of the refrigerators and freezers
