"His vanity mirrors hers in function and storage, but rather than a counterwall cabinet it has a taller unit for storage of all the bathroom towels and
bedroom linens," explained Richardson.
SHOWER CONVENIENCES

The barrier-free master shower offers a great deal of accessibility so the couple
can age in place in their home for many years to come. Features include an
adjustable shower bar that can be used as a hand shower, a bench for seated
bathing and a tiled shampoo niche within arm's reach from the bench.
"A shower valve located on the partial wall as you enter allows the water
to be turned on prior to stepping in fully," added Richardson. "The frameless
glass shower enclosure gives the shower an airy feeling and allows the natural
light of the room to filter throughout."

The home's original layout did not include a powder room, which is essential to accommodate guests. According to the designer, these are fun spaces
where you can add a little more play and drama, which certainly rings true
for this powder room.The underlit Dekton countertop features a large miter
detail to give it the look of a floating block of marble, and the darker tone on
the walls offsets its more neutral hues.
Sonneman's pendants, a hammered zink vessel sink and a deck-mount
faucet add some whimsy to the bath, and a strip of mosaic tile runs from
the floor to the ceiling for added drama. The mirror is flush with the tile for
the modern yet classic look the clients wanted for the wheelchair-accessible
powder bath.

CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED

"Because the project was such a large scope, we
found we were able to finesse and add detail along
the way, which allowed us to improve on our own
original design," said Richardson, citing the table
that intersects with the kitchen island."It was going to be a straight-seam connection, but we saw
the opportunity to connect both through one large
visual dovetail detail."
While framing the space, the team also saw
the opportunity to create a perimeter soffit in the
kitchen to create a visual break between the space
and the high ceiling.The soffit includes uplighting
for ambiance and downlighting for specific tasks.
"This project was made extra special by the
opportunity to not only design and build the
'hardscape,' but the clients also had us specify and
supply all of the furnishings," added Richardson.
In terms of challenges, the clients questioned
the large size of the island pendants as the project
was wrapping up, which the designer said tends to
happen when the space is not completely finished.
The pendants are now one of the clients' favorite
parts of the kitchen.
"They were the ideal design clients - very trusting and open to new concepts and exploration,"
said the designer. "It takes a lot of trust to hire
someone to transform their home, and they gave
us theirs. We really felt their gratitude."
The design team used 2020 software to draw
up the project and shared plans, materials and
elevations with the homeowners throughout the
whole project so they could see ahead of time how
their space would look and feel.
"Our approach to design is sustainable because
we specify and create timeless products," said
Richardson. "We are using details that will not be
outdated anytime soon."

