WHEN IT COMES TO TRENDS IN THE HOME, smart tech is steadily rising
to the top and sustainable design is a close second. This home in the desert
outside of Las Vegas boasts both qualities, and the minimalist architecture
and stunning view inspired the designer to create a kitchen that is ahead
of its time.
"The project was new construction and was designed to showcase the latest
innovations in technology and design,"said designer Elma Gardner of Davis,
Calif.-based By Design Studio.

THE SUSTAINABLE SIDE

This home's energy consumption exceeds net zero, which means that it even
returns energy to the grid. One major element that brought this about was the
home's location, which is perched on a 20-ft. dropoff. Because of this, some
rooms are underground and others are strategically placed to contribute to
temperature control.
"South and west-facing windows were kept to a minimum, and generous
overhangs were designed to combat the direct sun,"said Gardner."Glass walls
face north and east toward the view."
A covered deck also helps control heat intake, and windows featuring an
advanced protective coating block the transfer of heat and cold. An insulation system for the walls, roof and foundation increase energy efficiency and
provide air sealing, moisture management and acoustic solutions.
"Because of energy recovery ventilators, the home breathes mechanically
and achieves air quality close to that of an operating room,"said the designer.
Other eco-friendly attributes include an Energy Star-rated metal roof
and appliances; natural gas-fueled, tankless water heaters; LED interior
and exterior lighting; a weather-sensitive irrigation system; and low-flow
plumbing fixtures.

"It's just impactful. It has that
rustic, industrial feel but done
in a different, tasteful way,"
said Kate Bailey, one of this
year's judges.
RIGHT The paint throughout
the home is low VOC, many
of the countertops contain recycled content, and reclaimed
wood is used for the butler's
pantry open shelving.

With a 360-degree view of the Las Vegas skyline,
the kitchen's technology needed to be subtle so it
was not distracting. The best way to incorporate
this and make entertaining and daily activities
easy for the homeowners was to install a home
automation system.
"The system is very sophisticated yet simple
enough for the clients to make changes as they
are required," said Gardner.
Door locks, smoke detectors, HVAC controls,
the alarm system, pool controls, garage doors, motor court gates, interior and exterior lighting and
water features can be controlled by the homeowners whether they are in the house or not. In addition, motorized retractable screens deliver solar
shading to the outdoor deck. Recessed into the
structure of the building, the screens ensure fresh
air, along with shade insect protection and privacy.
"It is an entertainer's dream,"added Gardner. 
