Bath renovation provides ease of use,
function and serenity for an aging client
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS MASTER BATH in an Austin,Texas, bungalow
was to make it more accessible for the homeowner, who had recently had a
couple of ankle surgeries. The bathroom was added to the original house in
1987 with very basic finishes - cultured marble counters, basic tile and vinyl
flooring. It hadn't seen anything new since then aside from a few coats of paint.
Since the client was approaching retirement and planned to spend more
time at home, she decided to do the renovation. Realizing she never used the
bathtub and because her other bathroom had a tub, she opted for removing
the one in the master and building a nice, large shower. She loved the idea of
adding materials with calming elements, but she wanted to keep the character
of the house intact and needed to stay within her budget.
The homeowner had not yet worked with a designer, and it took her a year
to find just the right fit. She said she was drawn to Komal Sheth, principal
designer and owner of Spaces Designed Interior Design Studio, because she
liked her use of colors and that she had completed a variety of projects at different budget levels and styles, which told her she was a good listener.
"Bathroom renovations are a great opportunity to bring peaceful serenity to
an everyday process," said Sheth. "Our goal for this project was to create a soft,
natural and calming master bathroom while keeping it inspiring and functional."
EVERYDAY ACCESS
The previous bath was an addition to this 1940s home, and it had a hardto-access tub/shower combination that was leaking. Because the client had
