GOING ALL OUT IN THE BATHROOM

Thelen's spirited design sensibility appears in the downstairs bathroom,
which connects to the outdoor living area and pool and serves as the guest
bathroom for the downstairs bedroom. An outdoor shower also sits outside
this bathroom.The designer selected a fiberglass exterior door to protect the
room from the elements.
His firm designed and built the reclaimed poplar vanity, covering it with
a light whitewash. A gray countertop coordinates with the patterned floor
tile, and more of the shiplap lines the walls.
But the reason this bathroom is a favorite for the homeowners'two daughters is the oversized rainhead shower, which soars above a vintage clawfoot
tub, the only bathtub in the home. The exposed shower maintains the rustic
undertone of the beach house's design.

Upstairs, the children's dedicated bathroom has its own standout attributes.
An otherwise stark white space, the room features lively wallpaper with a blue
fish design against a dark background.Thelen chose the wallpaper because it
related to the beach, but it wouldn't seem too childlike as the girls got older.
A large walk-in shower is outfitted with subway tile, and the lower walls
have a Shaker-style wainscoting similar to what could be found in an old
farmhouse. Thelen painted the poplar floors white and added carpet tiles
beneath the sink area. He also placed tile directly in front of the shower to
protect the flooring from water.
With the bathroom's occupants in mind, Thelen chose a wide utility sink
that offers two advantages. He explained that multiple people can use the
trough sink at the same time, and "you don't have to wipe down counters."
Additional kid-friendly features include several chrome hooks along the wall
to handle towels from a day at the beach or pool.
A STEAMY MASTER BATHROOM

The master bath maintains the overall farmhouse
simplicity of the home but with one high-tech,musthave mandate from the homeowner: a steam shower.
Other than this modern amenity, the space remains
consistent with the design, and the shower's white
classic tile ties this space to the children's bathroom.
With about 80 square feet, the bathroom is
"not oversized," according to Thelen, "but it has
everything you need,"including a water closet. He
added a skylight and did the same in the children's
bathroom to add natural light.
Like other furniture and storage pieces, the vanity top, shelf niche and mirror of reclaimed wood
were designed and built by Linc Thelen Design.
There are no pops of color here; black slate floors
keep it simple, and the vessel sink brings the farmhouse feel into this space.
Having been put in the enviable position of designing a home from the ground up for clients who
trusted him, Thelen seized the chance to incorporate playful elements, like animated wallpaper and
pops of color. At the same time, he maintained the
spatial relationships upon which he founds his work,
whether designing something rustic or modern.
"When you have an opportunity to build a home,
try to be creative and have fun with it," said the
designer. "Think of it like [you are] creating art." 
