Consuming the daily recommendations of fruits and
vegetables can be a challenge. Blending a couple of
servings of each into a smoothie helps ensure you meet
your body's daily nutritional needs. With ActiveBlend,
your smoothie is ready for you to grab and go, making it
easy to maintain a healthy diet.The blender is built into

the refrigerator door - similar to a beverage or ice dispenser.
The refrigerator door acts as storage for the raw ingredients,
which are released into the blender. It also contains a selfsustaining garden bin to grow fresh herbs hydroponically
and features a multi-functional app.

A True Learning Experience
KBIS 2018 provided ample sessions, discussions and roundtables to educate attendees on such things as design for wellness and
thriving in place, the skilled labor shortage and a 2018 trends outlook. The next two pages provide a sampling of some of the
programming the KBB editors sat in on during the show.

Making Our Homes Healthier
Designing with the environment and personal
wellness in mind is a new trend from which everyone can benefit. "The Good Home Redux,"
a discussion moderated by Veronika Miller, the
founder and CEO of Modenus, took place during
KBIS 2018 and explored the newest ideas, products and opportunities behind this movement.
In certain regions, sustainability is a lesser priority for clients or design firms because of cost, and it
can be a challenge to incorporate in the first place.
Designers have to familiarize themselves with
products and direct clients to choose eco-friendly
items that make sense for them, like water-saving
fixtures in more arid climates. It is up to firms to
research which products truly help the environment and are worth the higher cost. Since most
professionals are hard pushed to find enough time
to do this additional work, the best way to become
a more sustainable practice is by encouraging everyone on staff to do research a little at a time.
Once everyone is on board, it will become part of
a firm's language and practice.
Designers can also help clients live better and
healthier when the project is complete. Safety and
aging-in-place plays a part in this, but it's also es-

sential to choose durable products that contribute
to good air quality and connect homeowners to nature. Color choices also have a significant role; blue
can make a room seem cooler and help with sleep,
while brighter colors are energizing and can improve
mood.Appliances like steam ovens incite homeowners to eat healthier, and natural materials and large
windows encourage them to adventure outdoors.
"The home is your sanctuary,"said Phoebe Oldry of
Kent,U.K.-based Smart Style Interiors."We need to
think about what will make us contented in a space."

Solving the Skilled Labor Shortage
The shortage of carpenters, plumbers, electricians
and other trades in the industry was a hot topic
during the show.The This Old House Generation
Next campaign, now in its second year at KBIS,
was started to encourage and empower young
people to pursue these jobs.The hosts of the "This
Old House" television show, Kevin O'Connor
and Norm Abram, joined Bill Darcy, CEO of the
NKBA, to discuss this industry crisis.
According to a recent report from HomeAdvisor, trouble hiring skilled labor is preventing
businesses from growing. Projects are getting delayed, and good installers are hard to find - often
resulting in botched jobs or miscommunication.
Tradespeople are getting older, and soon we will
reach a point where the majority of these experts
are retired.

Why the Shortage?
There are two main reasons why young people are
not going into the trades anymore. High schools
have discontinued vocational programs and in-

stead encourage students to strive for a four-year
college degree. Most high schools do not have
woodworking or mechanical shops anymore, so
students are never even exposed to the trades and
fail to consider them as an option.
Young people, along with their teachers and
parents, also have a negative perception of the
skilled labor trade. Most do not believe it is a worthy career or that it will allow them the financial
gain or status a college degree would earn.
"There is also a suffering period that no one
wants to go through," said Abram, referring to
the beginning of most trade apprenticeships."You
have to learn from the ground up."
The crew determined that the best way to encourage people to this take career path is through
education. Retired tradespeople should make a
point to visit high schools and talk about their
work. Individual businesses, trade associates and
other educational institutions should reinstate
their mentorship and apprenticeship programs.
Only then can young workers feel the skilled labor
trades are meaningful, lasting and fulfilling choices
for a career.
