Design Secrets That Allow Clients
to "Thrive-in-Place"
A home should be comfortable, safe and durable for each and every one of its occupants,
from children to seniors or those with disabilities.
This idea is integral to universal design. A Voices
from the Industry roundtable discussion led by
designer Dani Polidor of Rochester, N.Y.-based
City Sense, explored how its principles can help
clients enjoy fuller lives in their homes.
This growing field started more than half a
century ago. Veterans coming back from World
War II found themselves in homes that no longer fit their needs, making the return to civilian
life even more difficult. It wasn't until the 1990s,
however, that principles were set down for best
practices in universal design, and firms can use
them today for clients in every situation and stage
of life. These include:
âEquitable Use. Products should be useful for
people with diverse abilities, like using a lever
handle instead of a knob.
âFlexibility in Use. The design should accommodate a wide range of individual preferences
and abilities, like a faucet that can be operated
manually or with a wave.
âSimple and Intuitive. A fixture or appliance
should be easy to understand, regardless of
the user's experience, knowledge and language skills. One example is a smart shower
monitor with large print and obvious, universal symbols.
âPerceptible Information. The design should communicate necessary information effectively
to the user, regardless of sensory abilities or
ambient conditions.
âTolerance for Error. The project should minimize hazards and the adverse consequences
of accidental or unintended fatigue, such as
inccorporating grab bars in the shower.
âLow Physical Effort. The space should be used
efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum level of fatigue. With a counter-height
oven, a user with limited mobility does not
have to strain to reach.
âAppropriate Size and Space. The correct size and
space should be provided for approach, reach,
manipulation and use, regardless of the user's
body size, posture or mobility. Wheelchairaccessible hallways are a good example.

During a busy mid-day hour at the show, the
NKBA announced its key findings for this past
year and its predictions for 2018. The majority of
the data is optimistic, including a 9.9 percent spike
in the U.S. residential kitchen and bath market for
this past year.
Overall spending for kitchen and bathroom
products is virtually even, with each category garnering 50 percent of the market. Of the spending total, 63 percent comes from remodeling and
replacement projects in existing homes, and the
remaining 37 percent comes from new-home construction. For 2018, the NKBA forecasts that the
residential kitchen and bath market in the U.S. will
grow an additional 9.3 percent.
For its design predictions for 2018, the NKBA
conducted a study among designers, remodelers,
architects, dealers and manufacturers.The findings

from the study highlight dominant preferences in
the industry among consumers.
In the kitchen, farmhouse styles are the most
popular look in the U.S., with 79 percent of professionals reporting it as trending. Transitional and
contemporary designs are also in vogue. Paint is
the most popular choice for cabinet facing, and
quartz is the preferred option for kitchen countertops. Hardwood floors continue to trend in the
kitchen. White and gray are still the hottest kitchen colors, with blue and black coming next in line.
Not unlike the kitchen, transitional and contemporary are extremely popular bathroom styles
among U.S. homeowners. Wood is the material
of choice for bathroom vanity doors, and both
built-in and furniture-like pieces are used. Quartz
is as popular in the bathroom as in the kitchen,
and porcelain tile is a favorite for bathroom floors.
Freestanding bathtubs continue to trend, along
with undermount sinks.
