Kadwell specified a built-in refrigerator and dishwasher that look like part
of the cabinetry and chose brands known to last with great track records. She
added a microwave drawer for the kids to access and heat up quick meals, as
well a prep sink in addition to the main sink for multiple users.The designer
replaced the previous glass cooktop with a 48-in., freestanding, commercialstyle range, which she said was like night and day for the homeowners.
CHALLENGE 3: MANAGING THE MARBLE

"The dramatic black-and-white marble,a recurring motif,required careful cutting and selection to 'let the stone speak,'"said Kadwell."It brings contrast and
movement to the otherwise balanced design, and it speaks of luxury as well."
According to the designer, the marble in the kitchen needed to have a
definite direction to look like it was flowing from one area to the next. To
achieve this, the team had to cut the various pieces for the countertops and
backsplashes from the same slab, measure those pieces on site and take the
specs back to the fabricator to input into a computer program.
"This program allows you to move the template around like a puzzle to get
the area of stone you wish to see in the correct placement on the countertop
or backsplash before you cut the slab," explained Kadwell.

CHALLENGE 4: COLUMN CONUNDRUM

While Kadwell and her team were expanding the kitchen footprint, they discovered a structural steel column in the middle
of the room that could not be moved or removed. As a single
column would have disrupted the symmetry of the new space,
they decided to add a non-structural unit to balance it out.These
two columns attached to a beam frame the island seating area
and look almost exactly symmetrical, although one opening
on either side of the columns is a little longer than the other.
"We tricked the eye by where we placed the cabinets on
the wall and how we cased out the openings," said the designer. "The identically finished columns extend the central
concept of the design - and one of them hides an essential
structural element."
CHALLENGE 5: VENTILATION ISSUES

"Range hoods often present construction and installation
challenges, and this striking but extremely heavy design was
no exception," said Kadwell, who explained that the lead
carpenter discovered early in the process a flush steel beam in
the ceiling, which didn't help matters.
The design team collaborated with the manufacturer on
a way to work around the beam and still meet all ventilation code requirements. The hood's vent passes through
the wall so as not to hit the beam, which the designer said
was "construction magic," with four men holding various
components in place.
"There was a craftsman for the stone, two carpenters trying
to put the hood in place and an HVAC guy trying to connect
the hood vent," she added. "It was almost like an orchestra
where everything had to be composed in a certain order, and
it worked out beautifully."
