Products with Staying Power

Anthony Wilder Design/Build - Cabin John, Md.

First and foremost, a product must be dependable
in its performance, and the company that makes it
should have high standards. Elmwood Cabinetry
offers beautiful door styles and stunning finishes.
Top Knobs is constantly introducing new designs
with a large selection of sizes within each collection. ROHL's products have a timeless quality that
can fit into any design; the level of detail and care
given to each piece makes it a dependable and desirable item our clients love having in their homes.

indestructible, and today's

Home on Cameron - Alexandria, Va.

We determine staying power after a one-year project visit. The products and space in general should
still look brand new. If those stood up well during
the first year when everything is new to the client,
they will last for many more years.Traditional materials like wood, stone, metal, glass and ceramic
and encaustic tile can stand the test of time. Even
when they are mistreated, they can be brought
back to life. A new material for us is quartz for
the countertops. The material gives the look of
traditional stone with a modern durability, and it
can also be repaired.
RIGHT In this recent small kitchen remodel, the Home on Cameron
design team custom colored traditional encaustic tiles for the floor,
and the painted wood cabinets lighten the space. The backsplash is
a pressed tin ceiling they salvaged from another room in the house,
and the countertops are quartz. Photo by Stacy Zarin Goldberg

We as designers can think more creatively about
solving the refrigeration and freezer requirements
of our clients, providing more aesthetically pleasing kitchens. [We have been specifying] Sub-Zero
integrated refrigerators since they were launched
20 years ago - they really hit a grand slam with
that product introduction. More SKUs are added
occasionally, and there are dozens of size and configuration options currently.
Wood floors in the kitchen are the most common choice for our clients and have been for a long
time. There's a lot more in the way of good-quality,
prefinished product available now than there used
to be.The microwave has certainly shown its staying power, but it will be interesting to watch if
other cooking technologies will affect the predominance of its specification in the kitchen.

The surest way to stand the test of time is to use
materials that are familiar, durable and that become more beautiful the older they get. Stone,
heavy timbers and metals with a "living finish,"
such as copper, brass or bronze, are a few examples.
We like Rutt Cabinetry because the company offers a high level of quality and customization. For plumbing fixtures, we tend to specify
KOHLER by default. It's a reliable brand that
stands behind its products and offers good support. We specify smaller-diameter LED recessed
fixtures with multiple optics and a warm dim capability like those from Element by Tech Lighting. We like Miele because it offers a somewhat
more contemporary aesthetic that blends well
with the transitional kitchens we tend to design.
When the budget allows, we like Rocky Mountain Hardware; the product is high quality, and the
designs are great.

Surfaces and fixtures must be able to withstand
changes and variances in temperature and
moisture. They must be low-maintenance, easy
to clean, quality products and materials from a
reputable manufacturer. They must deliver what
the manufacturer claims in terms of use, installation and maintenance, they must have replaceable
parts that are easily accessible, and they must be
designed in a style that can look fresh whether
modern/traditional/transitional.
My go-to appliance brands are Thermador,
Bosch and Wolf, and I like Franke faucets and sinks.
For bathrooms,I like to use Ronbow,Moen,Hansgrohe, Grohe, KOHLER and Robern. For tile, I
specify Oceanside Glasstile, Sonoma Tilemakers
and Walker Zanger.
