Products with Staying Power

Lori Carroll
Lori Carroll & Assoc. - Tucson, Ariz.

Natural stone is by far the kitchen and bath material with the most staying power. Since no two
pieces are alike, slate, marble, granite, travertine
and limestone are quintessential design elements.
From intense textures to earthy color tones, nothing is more timeless than a material created by
nature, and for interior designers, the possibilities
are endless. Solid surfaces are a close second, since
they are highly resistant to stains and scratches.
Caesarstone and Cambria offer products in hundreds of stunning styles that make solid surface an
ideal material for countertops.
Grohe, Dornbracht, ROHL and Newport
Brass are a few high-end plumbing lines I use in
my designs. For hardware, Doug Mockett & Co.
lends a unique blend of classic and contemporary
style to any space. As far as tile distributors, Ann
Sacks and Waterworks are specialty lines that have
amazing products. A few of my preferred lighting brands are Terzanni, Hinkley, Ginger, Louis
Poulson, Sonneman and Tech Lighting.

BELOW The Vaia Faucet from

Dornbracht is ideal for a modern or traditional bathroom
with its soft design and open
silhouette. You can choose between cross handles or levers,
and the faucet is available in
platinum matte and polished
chrome finishes.

ABOVE Cambria's Brittanicca

Gold design is part of the Marble Collection, which is offered
in a Cambria Matte or highgloss finish. It is nonporous,
scratch and stain resistant and
maintenance free.

LEFT Thermador's Enter-

tainer's Dishwasher is ideal
for handling a large amount of
various kinds of glassware.

Trends are defining, and I feel that today's market
is demanding purity and quality first and foremost. Whenever you use Thermador appliances,
you feel like you are immersed in quality and beauty. The products are that perfect blend of function
and luxury, and they also cross many price points
to appeal to a variety of buyers. Cambria has an
awesome range of colors and products that look
like natural materials with a great selection of solid
colors. The company is also so friendly and great
to work with.

BELOW According to Van Deu-

sen, Kesseböhmer's LeMans
II Swing Corner Pull-Out for
blind corners has elevated the
space once dedicated to the
lazy susan to one of the best
parts of the kitchen. Gone are
the days of crawling on your
hands and knees to see what
is in the back corner. This is
one of the best inventions in
the last five years.

Products with staying power are classic, timeless and a nod to a trend but do not engulf the
whole trend. By sticking to classic elements such
as neutral cabinet colors, natural stone and simple
lines, the kitchens we designed 15 years ago have
retained their charm and freshness today.
Stainless steel appliances will stand the test of
time, as well as white bathroom fixtures and white
subway tile in both the bath and kitchen. White
cabinetry will always be a top seller, and neutral
and classic shades like charcoal, khaki and navy
have staying power. Save that wild color for the island or a wall color, which is one of
the most easily changeable things
in a kitchen or bath. Chrome and
brushed nickel seem to have staying power, while the gold tones
come in and out of vogue. Nothing beats using the largest undermount stainless steel sink that can
fit the plan.

Staying power comes from products and materials that are not overdone. Anytime you see too
much of the same product used in the same way
over and over, we get bored with it and want to
do something else. Products and materials that
stand the test of time typically evoke some sort of
nostalgia, as they have been used for decades or
even centuries. Products with a real purpose stand
the test of time; they typically stay around longer
or come back in a new way as design trends evolve.
Marble countertops have a specific purpose for
rolling dough in baking areas.Wood tops have anti-bacterial properties and can be used in a seating
area or as a chopping block for food. Wood floors
are easier on the joints and body, are warmer to the
touch and can give an inviting feeling to a home.

ABOVE Porcelanosa's porcelain tiles are Sheth's all-time-favorite, go-

to tiles. Kala White is an extra-slim tile inspired by white marble with
gray veining and is part of the company's XLight Premium Collection.

Kitchen or bath products and materials with staying power are those we want to use again and again
and that are easy to maintain. Those include mahogany and walnut cabinets and satin nickel and
stainless steel finishes. I specify Sub-Zero, Bosch,
KitchenAid and Jenn-Air appliances, and I love
steam ovens. I use Newport Brass, KOHLER,
Blanco and Hansgrohe plumbing fixtures, as well
as Blum, Häfele and Top Knobs hardware. For
tile, I like Ann Sacks, Porcelanosa, Artistic Tile,
Emser Tile and Walker Zanger.
