NEW YEAR, NEW TRENDS, NEW CHALLENGES

A

s I say every year, I can't believe KBIS is already
over. The whirlwind three days took my breath
away, as I learned about a ton of new products,
met with some up-and-coming brands, noticed
trend after trend and discussed key industry issues.
The trends I saw were in keeping with those of
several KBIS attendees, including members of
our Editorial Advisory Board and members of
the Modenus BlogTour.

This year, I led a group of design professionals
on the "Discovery District Tour," where we saw a
plethora of innovative products, including heated
towel warmers; mosaic surfaces; all-wood tubs;
highly effective range hoods - some in metallic
wood with mirrored finishes - an affordable appliance suite; bathroom mirrors with defoggers;
and a built-in, self-filling coffee machine.
One thing you can count on at KBIS is that
everything you saw the previous year is now new
and improved. Everything is evolving constantly,
but that doesn't mean there aren't products that
continually stand the test of time. The industry
experts we spoke to in this issue say that quality,
dependability and company integrity really make
a difference when it comes to the brands they
choose for their kitchen and bath projects.
Millennials and the skilled labor shortage
ranked high as pertinent industry topics. As the
younger generation starts to buy more homes, design professionals need to learn how to interact
with them effectively. Do treat them as clients and
not as children. Don't assume you know exactly
what they want. Realize that some of them may
think they know as much as you do. Millennials are
also looking at different factors when seeking out
applicable careers. They want to know as much as
possible about your firm.Do you share their culture
and values? Can you help further their development? Can they help contribute to your mission
while still maintaining a healthy work/life balance?
As far as the skilled labor shortage, that is going
to be a top-of-mind topic until we can find a way
to interest students in trade careers. It's up to the
parents and teachers to correct the stigma associated with those, and it is up to us as an industry to
start visiting schools and advocating those programs. Most installers are baby boomers today,
and they aren't getting any younger.
KBIS programming addressed those and a
myriad of other themes this year. If you missed the
show or just want to browse the events, products
and exhibitors you didn't have time to see, we hope
this issue is a valuable resource.

programmable showers.

" Matte black was everywhere - countertops, faucets, cabinets - you name it.
"Connected appliances and fixtures are making daily activities easier, leaving more
time to spend with friends and family.

"Specialized storage for a variety of utensils, dishware, small appliances and
toiletries was all the rage.
