CREATING STORAGE
& THE ILLUSION OF SPACE

"By adding a pocket door on the closet, we were
able to keep the vanity in the same location without blocking its access," said the designer. "We
knocked down the wall between the toilet area and
vanity to make the bathroom space feel larger and
less choppy, but we needed to add a door between
the bathroom and bedroom for toilet privacy."
Irwin explained that a traditional swinging door
would have created the same space issue as the previous closet door, so the design team opted for a
barn door custom made in dark walnut with a handrubbed finish by a local woodworker.They also used
a sliding door to save space on the shower entry.
"Instead of a glass door that swung out, we installed a frameless water-glide shower glass unit,
which is essentially a barn door for a shower,"
she explained. "It looks much nicer than the oldschool, framed sliding door units from the 80s!"
Originally the clients wanted a wall-mounted
toilet, but the exterior wall would have made
installation costly. Irwin opted for a low-profile
model that takes up less space.
Although two flat panels that slide out on the
custom walnut vanity hide what's inside, a variety
of drawers and niches were incorporated for ample
storage needs. The design team also left the square
footage in the nearby closet,which is the main storage area for the bathroom. A niche in the shower
holds shampoo and soap,and getting rid of the previous tub created more room for this space, which
includes multiple showerheads - a huge desire of
the homeowners.

ADDING CHARACTER

The cement flooring tile, the inspiration for the mid-century modern master
bath design, was a splurge for this project. Irwin compensated for this with the
less-expensive subway tile in the shower area and on the vanity wall. Using
the busy tile pattern in a larger format would have overwhelmed the space,
but it is perfect for the floor, and the more neutral elements in the bathroom
balance it out.
"The white subway tile is clean and simple, and the vanity and barn door
are hand-made from dark walnut, which doesn't take too much of the focus
from the black-, white- and gray-patterned tile," said the designer.
