WHERE DO THEY BUY?

For as many who source online, the same number
also like to visit the physical brick-and-mortar
location - some even tag-team and do both. If
they do visit the actual showroom or store, they
like to choose local vendors that are close in case
there are issues with a product.
"This depends on the scale of the project," said
Chantal Devane of Eden Prairie, Minn.-based
Devane Design. "If it is a simple cosmetic update,
I typically order the materials online from a wholesale plumbing source and/or local tile showroom. If
it is a larger-scale project subject to more complex
maintenance issues down the road,I let the plumber source the materials direct so they are installed
properly with a warranty from the plumber."

brick-and-mortar for sourcing tile.If her clients want to see something in person
before making a purchase, she will take them to visit a full-service showroom.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," said Corridan. "You can
lose time ordering something online and have it show up to be nothing like you
wanted. With brick-and-mortar, you also have the salesperson accountable."
Some designers choose to order online because of the sheer convenience,and
sometimes they get a better deal there than in the showroom.
"I recommend working with a knowledgeable sales rep before ordering
online,"said Thelen."I find I can get modern, freestanding bathtubs online for
a much lower cost than the showrooms offer."
Depending on the type of product,some things are just better seen in person.
"Usually clients want to see the products in person, and I like to see the
true color and texture of things like tile, paint and finishes," said Gilmer. "I
find that hard to do online."
A lot of design professionals feel comfortable ordering products online if
they have experience with that product or brand.
"I order online from brands I know or know about - I've usually already seen
them in person," said Koehler. "But I always want a personal relationship if
that's possible."

