Engaging the younger demographics

IT'S NO QUESTION THAT there's a "youthquake"happening across the country in so many areas - tech, communication, business, politics, social activism
- and it's natural to see it impact our business as well. The desire - in fact,
demand - for authenticity among millennials has put an emphasis on cultivating the younger generation to preserve the craft and skills so important
to our industry and develop the technology chops to take us into the future.

APPEALING TO STUDENTS

THIRTY UNDER 30 BENEFITS

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) plays an important role
in helping develop industry leaders with our highly regarded Thirty Under 30
program, which recognizes rising rock stars who have demonstrated excellence in the kitchen and bath universe. Nominations for the Class of 2019,
which will be honored at KBIS next February in Las Vegas, are open now
through July 9 at www.nkba.org.
To be eligible, nominees must be working in the kitchen and bath industry in any capacity: designer or remodeler, retailer, marketer, manufacturer
or other business role. They must be born after Feb. 19, 1989; interested in
furthering their kitchen and bath career; and be supported by their employer
to participate in the program. Most importantly, they must be outgoing and
have demonstrated their energy and enthusiasm for this industry.
The following past winners shared what the honor has meant to them.
"As young designers, we are often overlooked because we don't have the
years of experience that more mature designers have,"said Tyler Swartzmiller,
a designer at Kitchen Kraft Home Design and Remodeling in Columbus,
Ohio, and a 2018 winner. "It's a sign of validation that I'm on the right path."
Jonathan Barfell, who recently joined Liebherr USA as head of marketing,
concurred that the honor served as positive career reinforcement.
"Being selected for Thirty Under 30 validated [that] my work within the
kitchen and bath industry was really making a positive impact," he said. "It
was also an honor to be nominated by my good friend and business colleague,
Ellen Cheever. Since my nomination, I've had the chance to learn from the
other Thirtys and meet some incredibly talented people whom I look forward
to working with every day."
Barfell, selected in 2015, was previously a brand experience manager within
the appliance industry.
"I wanted to leverage the brand by supporting designers and architects,"he
added."This ultimately led to the creation of a CEU website with 12 programs
developed by industry leaders that are available free to everyone. In fact, my
opportunity with Liebherr was a direct result of a connection I made at KBIS
several years ago!"
The "Thirtys" will help identify significant trends, innovations, emerging
business models and more at KBIS 2019.They'll meet amazing peers, network
with established industry leaders and otherwise shake up the industry, putting
them on the fast track to wider recognition and potential future leadership.

The NKBA also aims to start earlier to engage
young people considering this lucrative career.The
association's annual Student Design Competition
is in full swing, and this year adds a twist that appeals to this generation's desire to give back to the
community. NKBA has partnered with the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Warren County, N.J.,
near our national headquarters. The top student
designs will be used to create a kitchen and bathroom in a home destined for a deserving family.
The winners will participate in the construction
of the home, see their designs come to life and
share in the gratification of knowing their efforts
have helped a struggling family get back on its
feet. We'll chronicle the progress of this endeavor
in future issues.
We're also planting seeds even at younger
levels. In March, I addressed administrators
and educators in a New Jersey school district to
develop a prototype for pathways to careers in
design and construction.
The dearth of skilled labor in the building trades
is no secret. For every five workers retiring from
these fields, only one enters. More than 1.5 million
residential construction workers left the industry
in the wake of 2008's Great Recession, and fewer
than half of those jobs have been recovered. But
in 2016, residential construction was valued at
$600 billion, and the kitchen and bath design and
remodeling market alone hit nearly $150 billion
- both up around 10 percent - demonstrating
vigorous growth that's anticipated to continue.
Construction is expected to be the fourth-fastestgrowing industry in the U.S. through 2026, with
some two million jobs opening up through 2020.
Our message to educators, parents and undecided students is that there's a vast opportunity
for well-paying jobs in creative, skilled fields
they might be overlooking that offers a pathway to their future and ensures the future of our
vibrant industry.

