to the living area to make
room for frequent visits from

materials of different colors
for clients. She chose a deep

dishes, as well as a counterdepth Liebherr refrigerator.

OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

Ramchandani admits she had no intention of starting her own firm when she
entered the interior design industry, but as her career progressed, so did her
life expectations. She wasn't nervous starting out because she felt it was the
right thing to do at the right time, but she asked for help when she needed
it from people in the design industry and even those who own businesses in
other markets. She also found a business coach she still uses to this day, and
her team encompasses one other full-time designer, a public relations firm,
an accountant and a virtual assistant.
"Being a business owner is a massive responsibility,"she explained."It is all
encompassing with client obligations, staff, industry partners and the vendors
I work with regularly. As CEO, I am the head of new business, the director of
accounts and the vice president of finance all at the same time."
Ramchandani is okay with making the occasional mistake because it's a
learning experience, and she knows she won't make the same one twice. She
believes there is always a creative solution if you can successfully compartmentalize your ideas.
Here are some of her rules for success:
ŽAsk for Help! If there is something you don't know, there are several ways
to figure it out.
ŽBuild a Great Team. You can't run a thriving business alone, so invest in a team
that can elevate you and do what you can't.
ŽBe Thankful for Your Team & Clients. Doing so keeps everything in perspective
and keeps you level headed.
ŽSet Clear Expectations. Do this up front with your clients, and be redundant
if you must. If you leave any room for confusion, it will occur.
Regarding her last point, Ramchandani said she and her team go through
a time-intensive process at the beginning of each project, and they do not
purchase things in pieces, which can be chaotic.
"We need cohesion and clear direction, so we come to an agreement as
to what we will purchase before we start," she explained. "Doing it this way
eliminates a lot of confusion for both parties."
