HUSBAND AND WIFE DESIGN

TEAM in Sausalito, Calif.,
transformed an 1884-dated
home built by a sea captain. By the time the couple
bought the property, it was
a triplex with units on three
levels that had been piecemealed together by the
previous owner. They decided to turn two of the
units into their single residence, and they use the
top unit as their firm's office.
"From the street, it looked like a house we
would like to grow up in - classic, elegant and
understated," said Jason Urrutia, principal of Urrutia Design. "The interiors were a smorgasbord.
All three units were a disconnect from the exterior
of the house, and they were dated."
The design team began with a conceptual
design of the overall house that would allow
the owners to live and work in the 2,700-sq.-ft.
property in completely separate spaces. All the
public areas are connected by oversized openings,
French pocket doors and a copious amount of
natural light, and each maintains the home's sense
of history through the repurposing of some of the
original beadboard and wainscoting.
