THE NATIONAL KITCHEN & BATH ASSOCIATION recently published both the U.S. Residential

Bathroom and Kitchen Cabinetry studies at the
national and regional levels.The studies, conducted in partnership with The Farnsworth Group,
collected information on market size, product
specifications, information resources, channel behavior, key product drivers and brand awareness
and usage.
A total of 2,766 interviews were collected
among builders, remodelers/general contractors,
residential property owners/managers and homeowners. (See top-right graphic for demographic
percentages.) To qualify for the study, industry
professionals needed to have built new homes or
remodeled kitchens or bathrooms within the last
12 months, and they needed to have purchased
cabinetry for those projects. Consumers needed
to have completed a kitchen or bath remodel and
purchased cabinetry for those projects.
The professionals surveyed have been in business anywhere from less than two years to more
than 10, with fewer than five employees up to
more than 100. Annual sales volume ranges
from less than $250,000 to more than $10 million. Most professionals (72 percent) specialize
in residential work, with 28 percent working in
the commercial segment. It was about equal
that the projects they have worked on were
remodels or new-home builds. They work anywhere from just one state to more than 20.
The consumers interviewed were predominantly male (70 percent), and the age range
was 25 to 75. Total household income started
at less than $30,000 and went up to more than
$200,000, and participants have lived in their
homes from one year up to more than 20. Home
values ranged from less than $150,000 to more
than $1 million.
Equal sample quotas were developed for each
region for nationally balanced data for both professionals and consumers, and the following pages
detail the key takeaways from those studies.

Demographics Interviewed for Study

According to the U.S. Residential Bathroom Cabinetry Study, the value of
the U.S. residential bathroom cabinetry market in 2017 was estimated at
$10.4 billion.
¨
At $5.92 billion, residential remodeling projects represent 57 percent of
the total dollars spent for bathroom cabinetry in 2017.
¨
New residential projects account for the remaining $4.48 billion, or 43
percent, of the total bathroom cabinetry market.
¨
A total of 1.156 million new houses were built in 2017, and 5.4 million
homeowners completed a bathroom remodeling project involving the
purchase of new cabinetry.
CHOICE OF CABINETS

Overall, professionals and homeowners favor stock/pre-manufactured cabinets for the bathroom. They both prefer furniture (unfitted) versus built-in
(fitted) cabinets, as well as framed versus frameless. Consumers who purchased a framed or frameless cabinet favor the raised-panel style, but professionals specify a variety of styles for each cabinet type, including raised panel,
flat panel and slab.
Professionals more often specify full-overlay doors over partial overlays,
while homeowners prefer the opposite. The top hardware style is the knob,
and the top cabinet construction material is all wood. Solid wood tops the list
as a cabinet-facing material, and white and light wood tones are the colors
of choice for bathroom cabinets. Both professionals and consumers favor a
stain over a stain glaze for cabinet applications.
John McClain of John McClain Design in Orlando and Los Angeles
said he has started to use metal cabinetry and more rustic wood finishes in
bathrooms when it comes to ready-made cabinets with an industrial vibe.
