Global Logistics and Supply Chain Strategies - August 2008 - (Page 28) ees in 150 countries, including 48 production and distribution sites in 17 countries. It operates in North America as OSRAM Sylvania. OSRAM will leverage ToolsGroup’s SO 99+ solution to optimize the planning processes of raw materials and components managed at its production site in Treviso, Italy. “Our decision to implement ToolsGroup’s SO 99+ solutions was principally motivated by the need to review our optimization strategy for purchased components,” says Giuseppe Carrer, coordinator of the Inbound Supply Chain improvement project at Treviso. “In addition to advanced technology and targeted solutions, ToolsGroup offers us a great deal of experience in the field.” ToolsGroup officials say the developer’s demanddriven inventory optimization solutions improve daily forecast accuracy and correctly set safety stocks to achieve almost 100 percent customer-service levels while significantly cutting inventory. Homeland Security Selects ODIN for License-Plate Scanning Program ODIN technologies was chosen as a lead RFID deployment partner for the Department of Homeland Security’s $62m Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative contract that was awarded to Unisys earlier this year. The Customs and Border Protection contract features radio frequency identification combined with license plate recognition technology. The program leverages RFID-enabled identification cards for faster border crossing identity verification. “WHTI [Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative] represents one of the highest and best uses of RFID that I can imagine—making our country safer, our borders more secure, and providing border protection agents with tools to make their job more efficient,” says Patrick J. Sweeney II from ODIN technologies. “Once again we are pleased to team up with our longstanding partner, Unisys, to bring a highly scalable, repeatable and physics-based approach to an RFID roll-out.” WHTI specifies that RFID will be deployed at more than 300 border crossing lanes which inspect and process travelers into the United States from Canada and Mexico. Thousands of cars cross these borders every day. RFID promises not only a greater level of security, but also a much more efficient process—saving time for travelers and reducing cost for the Customs and Border Protection operations. “ODIN technologies has deep experience in large-scale, passive RFID roll-outs,” says G. Michael Rodgers, Unisys program manager. “ODIN’s methods and software leverage physics and best practices to achieve accuracy and scalability through automation. We have worked on this together in the past and know that ODIN provides the kind of accuracy and scalability we require in an RFID partner.” Visit www.ODINtechnologies.com and ww.unisys.com. Nestle USA Names Schneider National One of Two Top Intermodal Providers Schneider National says that Nestle USA has named the transportation and logistics services provider as one of its two primary intermodal providers. In its new expanded role, Schneider will move goods from North American manufacturing plants to specific Nestlé distribution centers across the United States, including Mira Loma, Calif., DeKalb, Ill., Breinigsville, Pa., Forth Worth, Texas, and McDonough, Ga. “We selected Schneider as one of our main intermodal carriers because of the success we’ve had with them over the past 20 years,” says Joe Lombardo, group manager of transportation logistics for Nestlé USA. “They possess their own containers and trailers, which means they are well-positioned to help us optimize our trailer pools. In addition, Schneider’s use of technology allows us to haul more freight using less manpower while still achieving the easy, door-to-door service Nestlé prides itself on.” Visit www.schneider.com. 28 AUGUST 2008 http://www.ToolsGroup.com http://www.ODINtechnologies.com http://www.unisys.com http://www.schneider.com
