Global Logistics and Supply Chain Strategies - September 2008 - (Page 57) Former Assistant to President for Homeland Security to Keynote Event Frances Townsend will discuss geopolitical issues and their impact on global supply chains in the keynote session on Oct. 6. Her message will expand traditional views of risk while offering new ways to mitigate it. Her insights are gained from frontline crisis management and unprecedented visibility to U.S. leaders. Townsend served as the assistant to President George W. Bush for homeland security and counter-terrorism and chaired the Homeland Security Council from 2004 until 2008. She previously served as deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor for combating terrorism in 2003 and 2004. Townsend came to the White House from the U.S. Coast Guard, where she had served as the first assistant commandant for intelligence. Prior to that, she spent 13 years at the U.S. Department of Justice under the administrations of presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. She served in a variety of senior positions, including as counsel to the attorney general for intelligence policy. She began her prosecutorial career in 1985, serving as an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, New York. Graduating cum laude from the American University in 1982, Townsend received a B.A. in political science and a B.S. in psychology. She earned her J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1984. In 1986, she attended the Institute on International and Comparative Law in London, England, and later attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where she participated in the senior managers in government course. Townsend is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board. She currently is a consultant to corporations on global strategic risk and contingency planning. CSCMP and GL&SCS Present the Fourth Annual Supply Chain Innovation Award CSCMP’s Research Strategies Committee (RSC) and Global Logistics & Supply Chain Strategies (GL&SCS) magazine established the Supply Chain Innovation Award to recognize the best and most innovative teams in supply chain today. The 2008 Supply Chain Innovation Award finalists are: • Chicago Consulting and PartyLite developed innovative approach to driving efficiency through packaging design. • Cisco Systems is pushing the “green” envelope through an innovative product return/reuse strategy. • Dynamic Worldwide Logistics and Instaknow.com demonstrated a new business-to-business collaboration tool which drives competitive advantage. • GENCO and Sky-Trax described their development of an “operator-passive” warehouse productivity initiative. • HP Brazil has pioneered the use of RFID at the item level to track the serial number and history of a product throughout its lifecycle. • Lockheed Martin developed an innovative approach for forecasting the requirements of an extremely complex and long lead-time product. • APL Logistics, Con-way Freight and Michael Kors (USA) described their OceanGuaranteed offering which provides day-definite cargo service for less-than-containerload ocean shipments. • Booz Allen Hamilton, Morgan Borszcz Consulting, and the U.S. Air Force have developed an approach to improving a complex supply chain’s performance through increased awareness and visibility. This year’s finalists were chosen from 42 submissions and were evaluated by representatives from CSCMP’s Research Strategies Committee and GL&SCS magazine. Each will present their innovative supply chain success stories in Track 20, Supply Chain Innovation Award: Finalists Competition. You’ll hear these eight teams discuss their quantifiable and sustainable cost-savings, revenue-generating, or customer-satisfaction achievements. The presentations will be judged by a panel from CSCMP’s Research Strategies Committee and Global Logistics & Supply Chain Strategies magazine. The team judged to have achieved the most outstanding supply chain innovation will receive the Supply Chain Innovation Award at Wednesday’s Closing Session.
