reer that started with her father almost eleven years ago. Her father, John Merritt, was a lifelong engineer and project manager
in the oil and gas industry as well as a custom homebuilder, so she
was always familiar with building and project management. "I grew
up as a kid enjoying the design process, trying to make the entire
house functional and livable but with its own unique presence,"
McCarthy recalls. "I spent a lot of time designing homes, barns,
and outdoor living spaces. I enjoy designing spaces that are multipurpose in nature and appeal to the client's lifestyle."
After graduating with a B.S. in Construction Science from Texas
A&M University, she worked alongside her father, eventually taking over as president of John Merritt Homes Inc., the company her
father founded in 1999. "I think what sets us apart is that we are
a small family business focused on quality construction and good
communication with our clients," McCarthy says. "Originally it
was my dad and I and now it's my husband and I. I really try and
listen to my clients and design to their needs."
The entire process begins with the design phase, and McCarthy
is very active in ensuring there are no surprises down the road
during the construction phase. "I feel often times the design process gets rushed," McCarthy notes. "I like to take the time to coach
clients through the process and make it a fun adventure."
McCarthy likes to be there for her clients from the very start of
the design process. She works with a local architect, Walter Wong,
and together they help put their clients dreams to paper. McCarthy notes that Wong still hand draws his own designs, a rarity in
modern architecture, and uses creative approaches to visualization
and design. "Not only does it provide a personal touch," McCarthy
explains. "But having the plans hand drawn also enhances our creativity." Walter Wong and Associates has worked with John Merritt
Homes since the company was started 18 years ago.
Within the design phase, McCarthy takes into account several
factors. "We take into account such things as the slope and terrain
of the property," McCarthy notes. "We spend a great deal of time
making sure the house fits with the property's trees, sun orientation and potential views. We want the home and the property to
complement each other. The site is where creativity all begins."
