called Frankfort, with roughly 19,000 residents. It's not a wellknown suburb, but the 1890s prairie town is known for its charm
and family-friendly community events.
Given its proximity to major expressway extensions, the area
has grown in recent years. One of its residents is Tony Vari, president of Alexi Development, a luxury custom homebuilding company he founded in 2004.
"The area has really become a building gem of the south suburbs," Vari says. "The building codes are very strict, and housing
restrictions are high."
Those high standards were exactly what Vari was looking for
when he came across Frankfort. He initially started building
homes in the western suburbs, such as Plainfield and Naperville,
but wanted to develop land of his own. Sure enough, Frankfort
rezoned 13 acres from agriculture to residential, and Vari leapt at
the opportunity. "We ended up building 33 executive townhomes,"
Vari recalls. "And we sold 27 of them in 12 months."
That development is Bowen's Crossing and it began a thriving
operation that, while still building in other areas, has focused primarily on Frankfort. Alexi Development has continued with The
Estates at Olde Stone Village, Frankfort Meadows and Heritage
Knolls, as well as numerous luxury custom homes in historic
downtown Frankfort. Regardless of where Vari is building, he relies on a unique approach in keeping clients satisfied.
"We are a one-stop shop in terms of concept, design and build,"
Vari explains. "That has worked perfectly for us."
A large amount of Alexi's business comes from referrals, in
which Vari takes a large amount of pride. Usually customers come
to Alexi with ideas or concepts, and Vari then works with them in
creating a design.
Those designs are taken to print and then stamped and certified by the architect Alexi works with (for approval), and work
then begins on construction. And while Vari relies on clients' ideas
when it comes to design, he also has his own influences.
"I travel a lot with my wife, and we take a lot of pictures of
different homes we come across," Vari notes. "I want to build and
create something different every time."
