When you are walking through
the grocery store, chances are you
have come across a display case by
Southern CaseArts. And chances are,
you would not even know it.
And that is just fine with Dan McMurray, executive vice president of
Southern CaseArts. "We recognize
the need to make our products disappear as much as possible," McMurray
says. "The food is really the theater,
the fixture is merely the stage."
Southern CaseArts has been manufacturing quality stages for food for

more than 30 years. It was founded by
William Cary Jr. with one principle
in mind: to provide its retail partners
with powerful solutions to meet their
unique merchandising needs.
But that is easier said than done.
The grocery business is notoriously
competitive, and it can be very difficult
for retailers to distinguish themselves
from one another. And that's where
Southern comes in.
"The grocery business is such a
high-volume, low-margin business,"
McMurray says. "Product placement
can become a crucial element to a grocer's success."
The idea is to make the products the
star of the show. "We make barriers
between the consumer and the product disappear," he says. "If a customer can easily reach the product or the
product is visually unobstructed, they
are more likely to buy the product."
Builders and Designers
In addition to making displays easier
for customers to shop, Southern also
implements designs to entice them.
"We always try and produce a design
that engages them," McMurray says.
"We can make feature points such as
a dramatic curve in a fresh foods display to attract a shopper's interest; it
makes a huge difference in how they
respond to displays."
