facturing process," DeArment says. "That's been one key to
Channellock also is dedicated to reducing its inventory,
whether it is by consolidating operations, reducing lead
times or reducing set-up times. "Inventory can be one
of the biggest forms of waste if not managed properly,"
"If product is sitting in the plant, and nothing is being
done to it, it's soaking up rent," he says. "We have a strong
commitment to bring operations closer together so we can
reduce lead time and reduce inventory."
But Channellock knows that inventory is an important
area of investment. "You need inventory to maintain customer service," he adds. "We're cautious and have inventory in process so we can maintain customer service goals."
Channellock's market has improved in recent months.
"We're seeing better employment numbers and better
housing starts," DeArment says, noting that these are key
macro-economic indicators for the company.
When people are building more houses and buying cars
or consumers are spending more on home improvements,
"They look for our new tools to install the faucets, wiring
or ceiling fans," he explains. "That's triggering us to look at
hiring more people and ramping things up."
Channellock also is enjoying a boost in customer demand,
DeArment says. To cope, "We're doing a lot of research and
changes in distribution," he says.
Channellock puts high expectations on its relationships with
vendors. "Whether it's a supplier of raw material or a service
that's being provided, we want to make sure we're getting the
best we can from our suppliers," DeArment states.
This can be a two-way street. "We want to make sure the
relationships are mutually beneficial," he says, noting that
the company places a strong value on working with them.
The company strongly values its community relationships. "We make sure we're involved in supporting different charities and organizations," DeArment says. "We're
one of the bigger companies in a small town, so it's important. We appreciate that and respect the fact that our people
not only work here, but they live in the community."
