For instance, after Chairman Rob
Smith assumed leadership of the firm
in 1994, its largest customer, Lord
Corp., was growing and wanted to
outsource some of its machining. "At
the time, Acutec was a relatively small
supplier for Lord and had spent six
months repairing some broken fences
with the company," it explains.
But Acutec also was improving
its internal quality and standards.
"Acutec recruited some key machinists and established a strong core of
skilled people ready to take on new
business," it says, adding that it also
replaced unproductive turning equip-
ment. "In essence, Acutec was preparing to be lucky."
The company's improvements won
it an invitation to Lord's supplier conference, where Smith discovered that
Acutec was Lord's closest supplier.
"Acutec pounced on every opportunity to reinforce its proximity to Lord,"
it says, noting that Smith himself
drove a delivery truck to the company
at least twice a week.
"In the course of delivering the
product, he got to know everyone in
receiving, incoming inspection and
