Join Together - Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry - (Page 3) 2008: PROGRAM OF WORK Having completed a year-long strategic planning process in 2007, The Lancaster Chamber is poised to make an impact on Lancaster County through a new strategic direction and a list of priorities to tackle in 2008, in addition to some of the more traditional services provided. The Board of Directors has identified five priorities for the organization this year. They are: Route 23—The Chamber will continue to lead and actively engage others in the process of helping our community find the most comprehensive and appropriate long-term solution for the Route 23 corridor that takes into account the economic and transportation needs of businesses and employees, while respecting the growth and land development challenges that can accompany transportation improvements. Government Study Commission—The Chamber continues to support the process and work of the elected Government Study Commission members who are scheduled to announce their proposed Home Rule Charter in late spring. The Chamber will provide feedback at the appropriate time in the process, and be involved in the final stages of ensuring voters are informed and educated on the proposed charter prior to casting their vote in the general election. Convention Center—With a center designed to meet the needs of the entire County, The Chamber will work collaboratively with other organizations to ensure the successful opening of the Convention Center in Spring 2009. Implementation of the Strategic Plan—While implementation has already begun in some areas of the plan, 2008 will be a year of transition as we work to implement some new initiatives and strategies, while evaluating current program offerings for relevancy and impact as we begin living our new mission and vision. Organizational redesign—Operationalizing the new mission and vision will be our most significant task this year and will entail reshaping the essential components of the organization including a new financial and business model for The Chamber, as well as staff restructuring and volunteer committee alignment. The Chamber will research and implement a business and financial model that will enable us to successfully accomplish our mission, vision and objectives. In addition to these priorities, some new and enhanced services will be launched. Projects such as a Web site redesign; a digital handbook for business, community and online visitors from all over the world; and innovation and thought leadership circles on a variety of important issues will be some of the more immediate enhancements. With all of the new initiatives, we will continue to keep many of the traditional programs and services. The most obvious difference will be in the number of programs and events, being respectful of people’s time and allowing us more time to work on initiatives that have real impact on the business and community overall. Core Strategies The common thread in all of the priorities and initiatives mentioned above, whether old, new or being revised, is they all provide the opportunity to lead, connect and/or innovate. The Chamber is prepared to be a leader by serving. We will LEAD initiatives that mobilize business, community, education and government around a common vision of prosperity. We will be on the forefront of many issues, identifying potential challenges and solutions and watching out for our members’ best interests and the greater good of the community. We will lead the community through a process of defining what a Model of Prosperity looks like so we can further define our strategies to accomplish our mission. We will continue to CONNECT people to people; people to information, news and research; businesses to other businesses; and people to the world through our programs, events, Web site, new digital handbook and other online enhancements, and many networking and new Roundtable Discussion events. By multiplying the networks of connections already in place, we will reach out further and bring more and more individuals into the network of developing a model of prosperity. As we continue to reinvent The Chamber, we will be INNOVATIVE in our thinking and our approaches in providing new and enhanced services and making a bolder, more positive impact on the overall community. We will work to accelerate progress and expand prosperity to all by connecting entrepreneurs with the tools and resources they need to be innovative and successful in the market place; by sharing innovative ways to be green in our business practices, making us all more responsible for our environment and leaving the community a little better off for future generations; and in numerous other ways. In order to accomplish this lofty mission and vision, The Chamber realizes that collaboration with other organizations is critical to its success. Whether it’s in the form of shared resources, complementary services, referrals or other innovative ways, it will take the very best of all organizations and sectors working together for the greater good of Lancaster County to achieve the Model of Prosperity status.
