Connections - January 2009 - (Page 11) a group of people, put it in perspective. It’s nothing,” said Gayter. It’s nothing in comparison to the strength of a little girl to be able to tell her parents she was assaulted. “This whole experience reaffirmed my love for my job in advertising. It reminded me that I have to really step into my work and remember how my job affects other people. It reminded me that sometimes I, like so many other business people, can get a bit jaded with my job. It’s easy to feel jaded when you do the same thing every day. But you’ve got to keep your heart in whatever you do,” said Gayter. ■ LOCAL PERSPECTIVE THE RESILIENT DIRECTOR MICHELLE FORWOOD Client Services Director Michelle Forwood always believed the trauma she faced when she was young would one day be used to help others. She was abused and became pregnant as a teenager. When she began working at Cornerstone Pregnancy Care Services, she knew her story could help change the lives of many women. “I have dealt with so many traumas and today I have overcome with victories. I believe that I can stand in the gap for so many women in crisis pregnancies,” said Forwood. How Forwood advises overcoming personal adversity: I believe we’re not on Earth to lead comfortable, wonderful lives. Whenever we have something undesirable happen, we grow from it. It gives us an opportunity to step up, look beyond ourselves and reach out to help others. That’s the meaning to life. That’s where I find my passion. We can use our circumstances to reach out to others—in business and in personal lives—so that we know our circumstances do not have to overwhelm us. How Forwood thwarts becoming jaded at work: When I’m working, even if it’s on the little every day mundane things, I remind myself that each day presents a new opportunity. Even if I’m working on the same old same old, I know it can be an effective way to help my clients’ lives. On the job, I remind myself it’s not about me. When I change my focus to others, I know I can make a difference.
