Ruffner was catapulted into action. In 2007 Ruffner met with his father-inlaw James Houck to ask for his support. He pitched the idea to Houck about starting a roofing company. “I asked him if he thought it would be a viable business opportunity and when he said yes, I asked him if he would be willing to give financial support,” said Ruffner. Houck agreed, and $50,000 later, Ruffner was on his way to begin his roofing business. Both men knew roofing was a stable business. Ruffner understood that as long as there were people with houses, they were going to need roofs. That was when Ruffner’s business slogan was born: “We’ve been roofing since kings’ and queens’ time” because everyone in history has needed a roof. When the roofing business began to grow, the lessons his father taught him both in life and in death began to glow. His father taught him the value of forgiveness and accountability. Ruffner and his father weren’t always close.
