Connections - November 2008 - (Page 14) The Bottom Dollar THE BAD NEWS: Americans have financially gorged themselves and consumers have run out of ways to continue the spending binge. “Right now people are worried about losing their jobs and paying incredible amounts for food and gas. People spend 16 cents on the dollar for food, and 8 cents on the dollar [on gas]. It used to be 18 cents total. Six percent of our budget has virtually disappeared,” said Chief Economist Mike Donnelly. THE GOOD NEWS: Many items are on sale—from foreclosed homes to lower stock prices. The U.S. economy is a veritable end-of-season sale rack chock-full of great deals if consumers just know where to look. “Consumers have been squeezed and people need to come up with a way to deal with it,” said Donnelly. So how can consumers leverage the weak economy to their advantage? Modify spending behavior and capitalize on compound interest in the savings. WHERE YOU NEED US. WHEN YOU NEED US.
