Laguna Beach Visitors Guide 2009-2010 - (Page 17) 17 openings followed, and today Laguna hosts over 100 galleries and artists’ studios. Art of all genres and mediums can be found in galleries, public art displays, the college, festivals and the museum. Laguna Art Museum and Galleries Located in North Laguna, the Laguna Art Museum’s collection includes more than 3,500 works of American art, dating from the early 19th century through today. The museum’s focus is California art, exhibiting important works from all periods in the state’s art history. Landscapes, abstracts, surf art and more are among the collection here. The museum also holds Sunday lectures on various artists and art movements, and sponsors special events, such as the Plein Air Painting Invitational each October. The invitational, hosted in association with the Laguna COURTENAY NEARBURG Plein Air Painters Association, involves 50 of the best plein air artists in the country. Visitors can watch the creative process and later enjoy the opportunity to view or purchase works at the museum. For visitors interested in admiring or buying art, Laguna’s acclaimed galleries offer a wide array, including fine art paintings, glassworks, sculpture, jewelry, photographs, digital art and more. Public Art More than 65 pieces of public art are located throughout the town; many are the work of Laguna Beach artists. Pick up a self-guided tour map of the artwork at the Laguna Beach Visitors Bureau or enjoy an annual docent-led tour of the pieces (lagunabeachinfo.com for dates). Check out the first work in the collection, a bronze sculpture titled “Boy and Dog,” located in North Laguna. Installed in 1935, the piece, by artist Ruth Peabody, underwent renovations last year. Claiming the title of most expensive work at $265,000 is a 6' x 30' seascape in blue porcelain titled “Life Force.” The commissioned work, by Public Art * DID YOU KNOW?
