Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Fall 2005 - (Page 11) EDITOR’S NOTE: Though ourselves refugees in our own land, we at the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Louisiana Cultural Vistas were determined not to surrender to circumstances and to produce an issue of the magazine—if you will forgive the expression—come hell or high water. Despite our own dislocation, first to seven other states and north Louisiana, then staging at a satellite office in Prairieville, and despite Harvey Press, which prints the magazine, being inundated and destroyed, you have in your hands a special edition in response to the disaster. With the limited resources available, and our state’s writers and photographers scattered in chaotic diaspora, we chose to gather those essays we found by some of our most towering cultural figures and couple them with the work of a few intrepid photographers to encapsulate the impact of the two furies, Katrina and Rita. Ironically, Roy Blount Jr.’s glowing encomium to New Orleans was contracted for and edited by us from his most recent book two weeks before Katrina first formed. Because of our publication schedule, we were less well able to cover Rita, but want to acknowledge our understanding of the suffering and damage she wrought on our citizens in southwest Louisiana about which more will be written in the near future. Our readers will note that we also chose to proceed with other topics central to understanding Louisiana’s rich history and culture: on pepper sauce, coffee, and the badlands of Sabine, so as not to cleave to our faith that the work of the humanities transcends time and even the disaster of the moment. —Michael Sartisky, PhD , Editor in Chief Fall 2005/LOUISIANA CULTURAL VISTAS 11 11
