LOUISIANA ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES LEH, Caddo public schools awarded $1 million history education grant The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Caddo Public School system will receive a $1 million “Teaching American History” grant to better prepare Shreveport public school teachers to meet new state standards in American-history education, the U.S. Department of Education has announced. The three-year grant is a partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH), Caddo Public Schools and LSU-Shreveport. The LEH recently completed the second year of a similar three-year grant for public school teachers in Orleans Parish. “The underlying purpose of the national ‘Teaching American History’ project is to improve teacher preparation and student understanding and achievement in American history,” said LEH President and Executive Director Michael Sartisky. “Teaching American History” grant funds will enable the LEH, Caddo Public Schools and LSU-Shreveport to conduct nine fourweek, graduate-level Teacher Institutes in American History, three each summer for three years, led by scholars from LSU-Shreveport and Louisiana Tech. Public school officials estimate that approximately 225 elementary, middle and high school Caddo public school history and social studies teachers, who teach more than 45,000 students, will participate in the three-year program. Teachers attending the institutes will receive a $1,000 stipend, textbooks, classroom teaching materials, three hours of graduate credit and 45 Continuing Learning Units, half of the 90 units required annually. A selected number of teachers will travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with the curators of education at major historic institutions such as the Library of Congress, National Archives and Smithsonian Institution to learn more about those institutions and to obtain instructional materials for classroom use. Words & Music Festival organizers hope to reschedule it for late February or March.
