———————————————————————— ———————————————————————— Imperial Calcasieu Museum exhibits region’s art, history T he Imperial Calcasieu Museum has supported the visual arts and maintained artsin-education programming in the region for which it was named since the early 1960s. Founded in 1961 by the Junior Welfare League, the museum moved a year later to its present location in Lake Charles. There it assumed its own leadership and became the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. The name derives from its service area — Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis parishes, originally known as the Imperial Calcasieu region. As the only major visual arts and cultural institution in the area, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum houses and exhibits artifacts, information, and memorabilia depicting life in the old Imperial Calcasieu region from the time of early Native Americans to present. Also, in a recent partnership with the Texas Archeological Society, the museum established the Louisiana Research Center for the Attakapa Indians. The main building houses galleries, a reference library, collections records, archives, and a reception office. In 1982 the exhibition space grew with the addition of the Gibson-Barham Fine Arts Gallery. More additions in 1985 included the Annex, a small exhibit space that has served as an incubator for emerging artists to display and sell work, and a storage warehouse. The Annex is now the new home of the Louisiana Crafts Guild Gallery, featuring the work of 171 artists and master The works of a wide range of Louisiana artists and craftsmen are among the holdings of the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. ————————— ————————— craftsmen from across the state who work in a variety of handmade traditional and contemporary crafts: jewelry, metal, pottery, sculpture, wood, fiber, gourds and glass. The stately 350-year-old Sallier Oak graces the museum grounds, along with a sculpture garden containing pieces by renowned sculptor Lynda Benglis, a Lake Charles native. The Gibson-Barham Fine Arts Gallery maintains a full schedule of contemporary and traditional art exhibitions. The museum’s permanent collection includes the works of John James Audubon, Boyd Cruise, Charlotte Hatchette, and Robert Rucker, as well as the photographs of Elemore Morgan Sr., documenting the making of the Robert Flaherty film The Louisiana Story. By the time he reached New Orleans, his point of departure, he learned of the French Revolution and decided to stay in Louisiana. Baillo then went to work for a Pointe Coupee farmer, Jean Baptiste Lacour, and married one of Lacour’s daughters, Magdelaine. In 1795 Baillo received a land grant and in 1800 completed building what is now Kent Plantation House. In 1842, the Baillio descen- dants sold the house to Robert Hynson, who added two side rooms in a totally different style, Greek Revival. Hynson, who came from Kent County, Maryland, named his home Kent House. During the Civil War, thinking that the house might be burned, Hynson moved its furnishings to his townhouse in Alexandria, only to lose them when the city was burned. Although the house, which he refused to vacate, was spared, the outbuildings originally asso- ciated with the plantation were burned along with the rest of the town during the Red River campaign. The outbuildings currently in the complex came from other plantations and comprise a representative collection of the types of buildings on a Louisiana plantation at the time.
