Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Fall 2005 - (Page 47) Tens of thousands of bags of coffee fill a New Orleans coffee warehouse circa 1930. Brazil concluded that this disparity was caused by, “the civil war, the marvelous growth of the port of New York the consequent concentration of railroad lines towards [that city] all this has tended to turn from its natural channel the coffee sent from Brazil to the United States since the complete interruption in 1862 of the importation of coffee into New Orleans.” There was also the rigid enforcement of the quarantine at New Orleans to prevent the spread of yellow fever especially after the devastating epidemic of 1878. Brazil’s coffee exporters complained that it was overly strict against vessels from the coffee ports at Santos and Rio de Janeiro. Annually most coffee trade was diverted from New Orleans during fever season from March through September. Once the cause of yellow fever was discovered in 1901 and fear of epidemics ceased, coffee imports to New Orleans increased dramatically. In a lecture presented at the Tulane College of Commerce and Business Administration in 1915, New Orleans coffee importer Gustaf R. Westfeldt asserted that in 1899 and 1900 New Orleans handled only 6.5 percent of the nation’s coffee trade, but that it jumped to 23 percent by 1904-05 and to 30 percent in 1907-08.
