Schwartz A BEFORE THE It went by many names: The Free State of Sabine; The Neutral Strip; No Man’s Land; The Bastard State; Stinking Hell; and much, much worse. For 13 years, this stretch of lawless territory festered like an infected wound on Louisiana's western edge, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the El Camino Real, the royal highway that connected Mexico City to Los Adaes, a Spanish mission near present day Robeline. It was a place where life and death were equally savage and justice was a laugh-out-loud joke. This is a tale of espionage and treason, outlaws and pirates, runaway slaves and treasure hunters. And yet, for the people of various backgrounds and cultures who made the Louisiana Neutral Strip their home, it is also a story of hope and opportunity. 5,000-square-mile piece of geography that shifted ownership like the hot potato in a children’s game. It was simply a st In its early years, Louisiana's ownership was always in dispute. In 1542, Hernando de Soto discovered the Mississippi River and claimed the land for Spain. No boundaries were mentioned or defined. That oversight would continue to plague the area for centuries.
