Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Fall 2007 - (Page 38) New Orleans’ Faubourg Tremé Rooted in Tradition from a doorway and the screeching sounds of sanding machines attest to hardwood floors being reborn. Near St. Claude Avenue and Ursulines Street, debris is dropped into the belly of a large container with a thump, followed by a puff of ashy dust. The bells of St. Augustine Church, the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, and the Holy Faith Temple beckon the faithful. On North Robertson and Esplanade, a worker at Lil’ Dizzy’s restaurant arranges outdoor tables and chairs for Saturday brunch. A traumatic 18 months have passed since Hurricane Katrina barreled into the Tremé neighborhood causing devastation and pain, yet the neighborhood was spared long-term flooding. Tremé breathes, survives, and rebuilds although its pulse seems uncertain. One can’t help but notice the many empty lots where historic homes once proudly stood. In the 1960s, the construction of Interstate 10 down North Claiborne tore through the canopy of oak trees that lined the popular avenue. The Louis Armstrong Park development of the 1970s uprooted families from 16 square blocks of historic homes. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, many structures succumbed to disrepair, abandonment, and purposeful demolition by negEarly 20th-century aerial views of Tremé show a compact neighborhood of modest homes bound by tree-shaded neutral grounds along major thoroughfares. Claiborne Avenue, the verdant swath evident in the top photo, was later covered over by the elevated expressway of Interstate 10. The postcard below depicts Storyville, the infamous legalized red-light district that once bordered Tremé.
