Louisiana Cultural Vistas wins six awards from Press Club of New Orleans Louisiana Cultural Vistas amassed six awards — including three first-place honors in the categories of feature writing, layout and design, and photo story — at the 49th Annual Press Club of New Orleans Awards Ceremony held July 14. Free-lance writer John Magill won first place for his feature “Conspiracy of Complicity” (Fall 2006), an extensively-researched chronicle of the ill-fated development of New Orleans’ low-lying 20thcentury neighborhoods that were largely devastated by Hurricane Katrina. LCV designer Toan Nguyen also won first place for his layout and design of this story. Magill, a long-time contributor to the quarterly magazine of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, is employed as Historian for The Historic New Orleans Collection. Nguyen also placed second in the layout and design category with his layout of “Printmaking in New Orleans” (Winter 2006), an excerpt from a book of the same title. 2007 marks the second consecutive year Nguyen has won first place as a graphic designer. Louisiana Cultural Vistas swept the Photo Story category, winning all top three awards. First place honors went to L.J. Goldstein for “The Beat of the Street” (Spring 2006), a portfolio of images depicting second-line parades, Mardi Gras Indians, and New Orleans’ vibrant street culture. Second place honors went to Frank Relle for “New Orleans Nightscapes” (Summer 2006), a series of artistically-lit nighttime photographs of New Orleans’ iconic architecture, both in restoration and in ruins. Photographer Nell Campbell won third place for her documentation of Hurricane Rita’s aftermath in Southwest Louisiana in “A Reckoning With Rita” (Spring 2006). Louisiana Cultural Vistas has placed first in the Photo Story category 12 times in the past 15 years. Since 1993, Louisiana Cultural Vistas has garnered 90 awards from the Press Club of New Orleans, including seven first-place honors as Best Publication, a category that mysteriously was eliminated this year. At the Our grants support both popular and classical humanities. Since 1971, the LEH has invested more than $40 million in more than 1,700 projects. More than 3,700 middle and high school teachers from across Louisiana have attended LEH Teacher Institutes for Advanced Study, bringing back to their collective classrooms of 500,000 students new perspectives on humanities subjects ranging from the Harlem Renaissance to Chinese culture and history. Louisiana history, Southern folktales, Southeastern Native American culture, and literature of the American West are four of the subjects currently covered in the LEH-funded reading program for adults: Readings in Literature and Culture. RELIC has enrolled 85,000 readers in 62 parishes. Louisiana Cultural Vistas quarterly magazine brings LEH grant projects to the printed page for 50,000 Louisianians.
