Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Fall 2007 - (Page 41) New Orleans’ Faubourg Tremé Rooted in Tradition worker raised to the trade by his father Emmanuel Matthew, his house in the Seventh Ward took on eight feet of water during Katrina. Matthew and a rescue group dubbed the “Soul Patrol” spent 11 days rescuing stranded residents in a pontoon boat and bringing them to safety. He chafed at the way the military ordered him out of the city at gunpoint and sent him to Omaha, Nebraska. He now resides a few blocks from Miss Esther on Tremé Street, restoring a centuries-old Creole cottage. “The challenge is redoing something that’s beautiful,” Matthew states. “Why take something beautiful and replace it with something that’s not going to last? If that house stood up 200 years, that’s telling you something right there.” He points across the street to an empty lot where a recently built pre-storm house fell to the winds of Katrina — the only house on the block to do so. “It was a brand new house that wasn’t five months old. It blew down. They didn’t know the old way and that’s what counts.” BEGINNINGS OF THE FAUBOURG The early history of Tremé offers a window into New Orleans at the turn of the 18th century. The development rose from cypress swamps outside the original city. In 1796 maps, the only noted structure toward the lake past the French Quarter was Fort St. Ferdinand located at the end of Orleans Street. Beyond the fort lay the Congo Plains — a marshy hinterland noted as a gathering spot for enslaved Africans who engaged in ancient rituals.
