Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Fall 2007 - (Page 47) New Orleans’ Faubourg Tremé Rooted in Tradition family of Anne Barron, a free woman of color from Kingston, Jamaica, lived in the 1821 Laurent-Roux Cottage that stands today at 1014-16 Saint Claude Avenue. Agnes Mathieu first bought her property at 1135-1137 Saint Claude in 1799 and sold it to Jean Laizer who built the existing cottage around 1817. The Dolliole family’s cottages at 11251127 St. Philip and 1223-1225 Saint Philip date to 1821 and 1834 respectively. The Passebon Cottage on Ursulines and North Villere Street went from a state of near-death to a hopeful Passebon future after the French cottage under Heritage Society partrenovation. nered with the New Orleans African-American Museum to reconstruct the crumbling building. What does the future portend for Tremé? At the corner of Robertson and Governor Nicholls, I found Adolph Bynum mulling property that he hopes to restore as a catalyst for revitalizing the area near Interstate 10. As a cultural and architectural preservationist, Bynum puts his resources where his heart is. He PHOTO BY KEITH WELDON MEDLEY renovated an entire block of Saint Claude Avenue and hopes to do the same at the intersection of Governor Nicholls and N. Robertson Streets. He is as invested into Tremé’s future as he is as he is enamored by its past. “We are now trying to save the Passebon cottage not only because of its age, but because it can also serve the community as an educational experience. Here, one can enjoy learning the history of Tremé. We are trying to save other buildings We find it very rewarding. It has an economic impact, giving jobs, but also preserving the wonderful architecture.” LCV Keith Weldon Medley is the author of We as Freemen: Plessy v.
