Eloquent and touching – getting to know John Scott and Elemore were two of my most treasured experiences from my years at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Having John Scott describe his incredibly thoughtful and visionary creative process to me was extraordinary. I wanted to thank you for capturing the depth of this loss. —Clem Goldberger, New Orleans Beautiful tribute! I did not know Elemore well, but your memorial words resonate with all of us. Your wonderful description of his painting would have thrilled him! Tears welled up again when you spoke of John. Such a loss.Thank you for expressing the feelings that we can't. —Lin Emery, New Orleans You have written a lovely tribute for your friend, and I know he would have loved the inclusion in the tribute of another artist of his rank. Elemore was generous in just the way your piece is inclusive of so much that he valued in this life. Elemore loved the community of people who gravitated to art and the beauty of the landscape, rural or urban, which he loved so. One of the gifts he left behind to so many was that he paid attention, and your piece does just that. I am pleased and honored that my poem became part of the fabric of the tribute. I thank you. —Darrell Bourque, Lafayette You wrote a sensitive, caring tribute for your two artist-friends, ending with the lines from Dylan Thomas’ poem, “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.” I first read the poem in 1960. I was 20-years old and going through my first heartbreak, the stuff of Romeo and Juliet, and the poem resonated for me then, though I had many years ahead. Now as I turn 68, the poem means even more. —Ricardo L. Garcia, Lincoln, Nebraska E-mail letters to the editor at: lahum@leh.org 2 LOUISIANA ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES\Fall 2008 http://www.oxfordamericanmag.com
