the Masonic Temple, and other buildings occupy bits of this once-sprawling estate. Probably the oldest remaining group of houses in Highland is in the area bounded by Jordan, Creswell, Olive, and Irving streets. Irving Place remains one of the neighborhood’s most picturesque streets, though it has lost many of its fine Victorian homes. Large numbers of grand Victorian homes once graced Jordan Street as well, though only a handful remain. Losses of significant buildings in Highland have been substantial, especially during the last half of the 20th century. the Highland area. The foursquare type, with its simple plan and wide front porch, was popular on the upper East Coast and in the upper Midwest but is, like the California bungalow, an unusual architectural type to find in large numbers in the Deep South. Because Highland retains so many original structures, a historic district was created in 1987. Aside from this district, Highland also contains a number of individual sites which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Victorian Lewis House at the southeast corner of Jordan and Irving streets (1899), the Bradbury-Davidson Highland also boasts Shreveport’s first apartment buildings, a phenomenon which appeared in the first decade of the 20th century but which exploded in popularity in the 1920s. From the same era comes the bungalow. Louisiana’s largest collection of these modest dwellings is found in the Highland area with more than 400 examples, about a tenth of which are pure “California bungalows” — a architectural style popular on the West Coast in the era just preceding World War I, though seldom found in the South. Almost as many two-story “foursquare” houses from the same era can also be found in House at 654 Wichita Street (1893), the modernistic Masonic Temple on Creswell Street (1937), and the Lindsay House (commonly called the Symphony House) on Woodlawn opposite Centenary College (it was originally located downtown at the southwest corner of McNeill and Fannin streets where it was built in 1872). Among other Highland area landmarks are Centenary College which located there in 1908, moving from Jackson, Louisiana; the old Agudath Achim synagogue (now Rutherford House) on Line Avenue at Margaret Place (1938); and the Eglin House (1900) at 1743 Irving Place, The Slattery House, located at Fairfield Avenue at Dalzell Street, was built in 1903 by attorney John B.
